This TED Talk reminded me that democracy is more than just voting—it's a way of organizing society that requires continuous practice and a commitment to truth-telling, even when we disagree. One thing that resonated with me is the importance of face-to-face interaction in fostering genuine connections and mutual respect, which are crucial for a thriving democracy. Social media, while convenient, can dehumanize others and undermine constructive dialogue. Instead, joining diverse groups and engaging in real-world discussions can help us become better citizens. https://lnkd.in/e5Ey975G

Co-Founder, Director & Curator TEDAI in Vienna. (Re)tired media technology researcher. Also, I have a doctorate, but so does Dr. Oetker.
𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀. We need more formats in which we see leading experts thoughtfully exchanging different viewpoints while challenging each others' ideas with empathy and respect; that's why I am particularly excited about the upcoming debate on the future of democracy between Angela Bourne and @Ulrich Wagrandl on May 24 here in Vienna. With the future of democracy at stake in so many countries around the world, this issue is more urgent than ever, and I hope you will join us: https://lnkd.in/dx8SNS9D

The running joke on zoom calls for me the past few weeks. “Did I mention I just went to TED?” Of the 60 (!) or so talk I saw this was my favourite. It could have easily been twice its length because he has great data to back it up - but it encapsulates so much of what’s wrong in our economy for people just starting out. And if you want a master class in how to insert humour and personality into a presentation, couldn’t be a better person to study and emulate. #economics #presentations

Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Webinar: Improv for Democracy—How to Bridge Differences and Develop the Skills Our World Most Needs This past webinar features Don Waisanen is an Associate Professor in the Baruch College, CUNY Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, where he teaches courses and workshops in public communication—including executive speech training, communication strategy, and seminars on leadership/management and improvisation. A remarkable number of programs seeking to bridge differences between citizens have emerged around the world. Many of these initiatives have drawn from a field that may at first seem to have little to do with such work: improvisational theater. From its roots in comedy, improvisational training has helped people become more confident and responsive with others, creative in generating ideas, and skillful in working with the unexpected. Building on existing efforts to promote dialogue, peace-building, and more, improvisation is now also being used for everything from building literacy skills in disadvantaged schools to improving relationships between police and civilians, with a recognition that this type of intervention trains people to listen to and learn from one another in a way that promotes empathy and understanding. Based on Don Waisanen’s forthcoming book, this webinar highlights how improvisation can provide a foundational education in democratic practices.
