Do you think museum shops are just places to "buy stuff" on the way out? Think again! As one of the few companies surveying the entirety of the guest experience within visitor-serving organizations, we often pick up insights related to museum retail experiences in the course of our research. And what we see is that museum retail stores can impact perceptions of cultural organizations' unique reputations and singular experiences in nuanced and powerful ways. Today on KYOB+ we're exploring perceptions of museum retail through three different lenses: why people go into stores, what makes for a satisfactory retail experience, and what the best thing about the experience was. Cannes is neither perfect nor overblown. It’s up to you… if you want to consume all the creativity on display in the Palais. It’s up to you… if you want to sit through the plethora of GenAI conversations. It’s up to you…if you want to catch up with long lost colleagues along the Croisette. It’s up to you… if you want to party at Baoli or La Guerite It’s up to you…if you want to imagine & ideate the future of our industry in a pavement cafe. That’s the beauty of Cannes. What we choose to do; how we choose to do it; and who we choose to do it with. It’s entirely up to each of us. Cannes - like life - is up to each and every one of us. We get out what we put in. It's a smart practice to ensure your cultural organization is optimally priced. But what does it mean to be optimally priced? It's all about finding the "sweet spot" where you're maximizing admission revenue without jeopardizing attendance. One key to finding that sweet spot is to understand the difference between what's considered expensive and what's considered valuable -- and while sometimes these concepts can be similar, at other times they work quite differently. Our latest article on Know Your Own Bone takes a deep dive into these concepts as we explore audience perceptions of cost and value for eleven different cultural organization types. Heads up, fellow data nerds: this article has a whopping 35 charts delving into perceptions related to value and cost, from how price impacts satisfaction to how willing people are to endorse an institution according to its value. Happy #FridayPost, curious souls! Today, I'm inviting you to join me on an unconventional virtual tour—a museum where the exhibits are failures, the tickets are free, and the lessons are priceless. Welcome to the Museum of Failure! I bumped onto this website during the week as I was Googling for a solution to best index my own failures. This unique online destination is a library of the missteps, the miscalculations, and the products that were supposed to change the world... but didn't. From the tech gadgets that made us go "huh?" to the marketing mishaps that had us asking "why?"—each story is a masterclass in humility and innovation. Why am I so excited about a museum full of flops? Because each one holds a story, a lesson, and a spark of encouragement that even the best can stumble. It's proof that failure isn't the end of creativity but often can be the beginning of a greater success story. As we close off the week, let's ponder this: In the face of failure, do we take the time to unpack the why and how? Do we absorb the hard-earned lessons, or are we too quick to chase the allure of 'what's next'? And so, I leave you with this question: "Do you learn from your failure, or move on to the next big thing?" In my book just documenting ‘Lessons Learnt’ does not count. Drop your thoughts, your stories, or even your favourite exhibit in the comments.

Head of Experience Design and Content at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Senior Management Team)
Last year, Matada Research carried out this excellent research, commissioned by some awesome colleagues at Te Papa, Samuele De Stefani and Adrian Kingston. For those of you working in the physical space, there's discussion around the importance of museums as ‘relational spaces’, and of authenticity, belonging, and interactivity. A few pull-out quotes: ‘These relationships can be formed when museums become living, interactive, engaging, and emotional spaces … where Pacific audiences contribute to conversations’, ‘Pacific peoples want … to bring their taonga to life through song, dance, arts, and laughter’, and ‘would like to see more immersive experiences … and a more comprehensive representation of Pacific history and culture.’ Let’s all support those aspirations, for our Pasifika communities and beyond. https://lnkd.in/geng3JWJ

Rediscovering Heritage: Why Museums Still Matter in Today's Digital Age" 🌟 In an era defined by screens and virtual experiences, the allure of museums may seem to dim in the eyes of today's generation. Yet, beneath the surface lies a treasure trove of invaluable experiences waiting to be unearthed. Museums are not just repositories of artifacts and antiquities; they are living, breathing narratives that connect us to our past, illuminate our present, and inspire our future. In a world inundated with information, museums offer a sanctuary of contemplation—a space where we can pause, reflect, and immerse ourselves in the stories of civilizations long gone. By stepping through the doors of a museum, we embark on a journey of discovery—a journey that transcends time and space, inviting us to explore the wonders of the world and the depths of the human spirit. In today's fast-paced world, where instant gratification reigns supreme, museums offer a reprieve—a chance to slow down, engage our senses, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of our shared heritage. So, let us not overlook the profound value of museums in our digital age. Let us embrace the opportunity to wander through halls of wonder, to marvel at the masterpieces of art and science, and to reconnect with the stories that shape who we are. #RediscoverHeritage #MuseumMagic #culturalexploration
