It is pleasing to be shortlisted in The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) "AD Research and Innovation Awards" for 2024. The collaborative effort with Ixora Energy Limited is demonstrating Dark Fermentation of agricultural feedstocks at commercial scale. The result is a new source of #biohydrogen and boosted conversion rates of #biomethane. SMASH technology might just rewrite #anaerobicdigestion industry operating models...
We are very excited to announce that Ixora and ALPS Ecoscience UK Ltd have been shortlisted for the 2024 AD and Biogas Industry Awards’ ‘AD Research and Innovation’ category. This is thanks to our ground breaking collaboration on the SMASH project; the first commercial scale production of biohydrogen in the UK. The benefits of producing biohydrogen are manifold, not least because it could produce a clean fuel source for transportation, bringing us ever closer to our Net Zero goals! 𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒍: 𝑶𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆 𝒃𝒊𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒆 As Alessandro v. Arco Gardemann, Director at Geo bio gas&carbon, explains in this interview, biomethane potential in Brazil is high and waste resources are available. The company is a concrete example of how biomethane production is already a reality: it has 3 biogas and biomethane plants commissioned and 5 under construction. https://bit.ly/4chTv4l

Ireland becoming an AD superpower 🙌 Ireland is making significant strides toward a greener future with the announcement of the Government’s National Biomethane Strategy. This strategy from Ireland aligns perfectly with the REPowerEU strategy and global push for biogas. With the EU’s strong support for renewable energy, we can see similar initiatives spreading across Europe and beyond. Commercial Director at ALPS Ecoscience UK Ltd. Innovation in Green Fuels - Biohydrogen, Biogas & Climate-tech.
Data driven decision making represents a significant opportunity for the #biogas industry. Typically decentralised and with limited data sharing between plants, many of the opportunities for process improvement through best practice are as yet unknown. The work of Michael Short and his team at University of Surrey will enable patterns to be identified and with them opportunities where process automation, machine learning and ultimately #AI can contribute to increased production efficiency, biological optimisation and dynamic pricing. In an industry currently challenged by operational staff shortages and with limited back office its reassuring to learn that bright minds are looking at the data on the industry's collective behalf. It's great also to see a Supergen Bioenergy Hub supported project engaging with industry and sharing news of academic research. #anaerobicdigestion
I had the pleasure of giving a talk at the World Biogas Association's World Biogas Summit and Expo last week, talking about the role of AI in the biogas industry at the Engine Room. I am used to speaking at academic conferences so this was a bit new to me, but delivering news on our research to industry practitioners has shown that there is a massive appetite in industry for better decision-making and predictive capabilities in the anaerobic digestion community. I spoke about our AI4AD research project as part of the EPSRC AI for Net Zero community, and the work on digitalisation in the bioenergy sector with the Supergen Bioenergy Hub. Thanks to Gareth Mottram for chairing the session and to The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA), Flavio Ascenco and Adam McGovern FRSA for the excellent organisation and invitation. #MakingBiogasHappen #WorldBiogasExpo #BiogasTradeShow #AnaerobicDigestion

It is an honor to receive the BIOGAS ex aequo award for our biogas plant in Parets del Vallès, Spain, together with the biogas plant at the Can Mata controlled deposit. Granted by the Cluster Bionergia Catalunya, the Bioenergy Awards recognize the best practices in the use of more circular and social energy. ♻ Our #biogas plant in Parets del Vallès uses UASB anaerobic technology to treat wastewater with a high chemical demand of oxygen. This allows us to improve the treatment of wastewater and reduce our carbon footprint by blending biogas with natural gas for steam production. 🌍 Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of Grifols' priorities. We have formal commitments aligned with the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals to decarbonize our activities by 2030 and aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. #climatechange #sustainability #SustainableFuture
