Today is World Water Day and the UN theme for 2024 is #WaterForPeace. Did you know that of 153 countries that share rivers, lakes and aquifers with their neighbours, only 24 countries report having cooperation agreements for all their shared water? We must work together to balance everyone’s human rights and needs. Water can be a stabilising force and a catalyst for sustainable development. #WorldWaterDay

DAY 1️⃣7️⃣ / 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ Managing climate displacements (1) ........................... Amara became involved in efforts to manage climate displacements. She participated in sensitization exercises, learning about the importance of raising awareness about climate change and its effects on society. She began to advocate for better legal frameworks and supported environmental sustainability programs. Despite the slow progress, Amara worked tirelessly to educate others and push for change. Her involvement in these efforts provided a sense of purpose and hope, even as the reality of their situation remained difficult. She saw these initiatives as crucial for their future and for addressing the broader issue of climate displacement. ........................... Managing climate displacements (1) The following options can be deployed in managing climate displacements: 📍A. Sensitization exercise. It is necessary to educate the masses on climate change and its societal impacts to increase empathy and support for displaced persons. 📍B. Legal framework. Treaties and agreements aimed at harmonizing efforts for assisting climate refugees and minimizing climate change effects is crucial. Current frameworks offer little or no protection. 📍C. Environmental Sustainability Programs. Implementation of programs in both origin and destination areas to mitigate further climate impact and rehabilitate ecosystems will help in catering for climate refugees and also prevent environmental displacement. #refugee #Iom #migrants #law #treaties #conventions #sustainability #climatechange #naturaldisasters

We're on day four of the #InsureOurFuture Global Week of Action. Our Campaign Coordinator, Zaki Mamdoo sheds light on how environmental damage and human rights violations intersect, as evidenced by the injustices associated with the #EACOP project. Those who oppose this controversial project are met with violent treatment while communities grapple with displacement and devastating impacts on their means of living. Social justice and climate justice are interconnected. We must urge CNOOC, SINOSURE, China Re, and similar insurers to withdraw their support for hazardous undertakings such as EACOP that jeopardize our environment and people's well-being. We must campaign for safeguarding societies and sustainable prospects for all individuals. #TotalLiberation #ClimateJusticeIsSocialJustice #StopEACOP!

22 March is #WorldWaterDay! This year’s theme “leveraging water for peace” calls us to reflect upon the transformative power of water as a catalyst for peace. #Water often plays a significant role during conflicts, serving as a trigger, weapon, or casualty. However, by leveraging integrated approaches and promoting transboundary #WaterManagement, we can harness its potential as a unifier rather than a source of conflict. With the escalating impacts of #ClimateChange leading to water scarcity and pollution, urgent steps are needed to protect and conserve this precious resource for our ecosystems and future generations. In efforts to support peaceful #WaterCooperation, several projects under the #TeamEuropeInitiative on Transboundary Water Management in Africa are being implemented. Together with our partners, we have the potential to shape a future where access to water serves as a pathway to #peace, advancing the realisation of #SDG6 for all. SCO STANDS WITH OUR TREATY TWO MEMBER NATIONS The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is proud to support our relatives from the Interlake Reserves Tribal Council (IRTC) following a new report from the federal government on the proposed Lake Manitoba and Lake St. Martin Outlet Channels Project. The report is a thorough environmental assessment of the project. According to the environment minister, the report finds the initiative may lead to "significant adverse environmental effects" for about 30 Indigenous communities, and could also impact their treaty rights. In a published report, Lake Manitoba First Nation Chief, and SCO Acting Grand Chief Cornell McLean acknowledged the need for proper flood protection for the city of Winnipeg and communities downstream. However he also emphasized that the affected First Nations, including his home community, have to be properly consulted, and be directly involved in the final planning for a flood mitigation project in the Interlake. Our Nations in the Interlake were hit particularly hard during devastating floods in 2011 and 2014. SCO is hopeful that this report along with a new provincial Treaty partner in place, will lead to a viable and sustainable solution for everyone involved. #SCOINCMB #IRTC #InterlakeReservesTribalCouncil #LakeStMartin #LakeManitoba #Interlake #Flood #Environment #Manitoba #LittleSaskatchewan #Pinaymootang #DauphinRiver #Kinonjeoshtegon
