Reconsidering how we deal with water will be a defining challenge for cities and urban settlements in the 21st century. In order to begin to tackle this challenge, we need inspiration. Here's one example no too far away:

TAKE ACTION FOR CLIMBING NOW! 🚨 The EXPLORE Act is being considered for inclusion in a package of bills that will be passed by the U.S. Congress next week. To make sure the EXPLORE Act is added to the package, your members of Congress need to hear from you—RIGHT NOW! Please contact your Senators and Representatives to encourage them to pass the EXPLORE Act. This would be a major success for climbers and climbing landscapes. It only takes a few minutes, and we've even written out a template for you! *** What is the EXPLORE Act again? You may recall that the EXPLORE Act (Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences) was unanimously passed in the House last April after being introduced by Representative Westerman (R-AR) and Representative Grijalva (D-AZ). It contains: -The Simplifying Outdoor Access for Recreation Act (SOAR) has been a priority for the AAC and partner organizations such as the American Mountain Guides Association, Outdoor Alliance, and The Mountaineers for 10 years. It updates and streamlines recreational permitting for guides, making the outdoors more accessible. -The Protecting America’s Rock Climbing Act (PARC), which the AAC and Access Fund have collaborated on extensively, will help safeguard the historic use and maintenance of fixed anchors in Wilderness, and reaffirms the appropriateness of climbing on public lands. -The BOLT Act; making FICOR (the Federal Interagency Council on Outdoor Recreation) permanent; Recreation Not Red Tape, and several other pieces of legislation impacting outdoor infrastructure. *** This would be a significant win for climbers and climbing landscapes and there is full bipartisan support for the EXPLORE Act. [Our own way 🙌] It's time for sports at Colas: Episode 1! Climbing, canoeing, soccer, biking… tune in this summer to (re)discover a selection of emblematic Colas projects that are making sports activities possible around the world. Let’s visit Épinal in eastern France which boasts a stadium like no other. Here, there’s no athletic track or soccer field in sight. Instead, there’s a watercourse! A training center for top-level athletes, this site has the capacity to accommodate spectators and organize official international competitions, giving a new dimension to whitewater sports in France. On this exceptional project, Colas highlighted the diversity of its activities by carrying out earthworks, utility networks, concrete works, as well as pollution remediation and the development of the watercourse. We also implemented the low-carbon footprint Urbalith coating. Designed as a multi-activity leisure area with cycling, hiking and various water sports, the Épinal stadium encourages the development of local tourism. The fire service can even use it as a training ground for flooding risks and water rescues. Breaking news: the Senate just passed the EXPLORE Act, and it is headed to the President’s desk to be signed into law! The EXPLORE Act, a bipartisan recreation policy package, takes important steps to expand and improve outdoor recreation opportunities. The highlights include the Biking on Long Distance Trails Act (BOLT) to identify and create more long-distance bike trails, the Protecting America's Rock Climbing Act (PARC) to safeguard Wilderness climbing, the Simplifying Outdoor Access for Recreation Act (SOAR) that will improve recreational permitting for outfitters and guides, and permanent direction for the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership and FICOR.

In case people ask about the environmental impact of mountain biking or hiking on trails, American Trails provides a whole host of collected research on this, as well as other topics like economic impact of trails: "A body of empirical, scientific studies now indicates that mountain biking is no more damaging than other forms of recreation, including hiking. Thus, managers who prohibit bicycle use (while allowing hiking or equestrian use) based on impacts to trails, soils, wildlife, or vegetation are acting without sound, scientific backing. In contrast, if a manager prohibits one user group on the basis of providing a particular type of experience for another group, the evidence provided by social studies may or may not justify that decision. This situation underscores the need for ongoing investment in environmental management. Paris’ historical sewage system was visionary for its time, but today's challenges require continuous innovation and upgrades. The city's efforts reflect a commitment to honoring the past's ingenuity while addressing contemporary demands. To truly safeguard our environment, we must build on the vision of those who came before us, ensuring our infrastructure can meet future challenges.
