When marketing does a great job of explaining a superior construction solution:
❌ THE CHALLENGE: Traditional fireproofing typically takes place on the jobsite, after steel has been erected. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors (or MEP, for short) have to stop work to allow for the application of fireproof coating, significantly slowing down the overall construction schedule. Oof – what a lengthy process. ✔️ THE SOLUTION: Sherwin-Williams comes in with shop-applied fireproofing, taking one job OUT of the construction site and putting time and money INTO owners' and construction partners' pockets. Preparation works takes the longest time. But once done, execution works on site will move smoothly and fast, which will give easily 2x output and higher accuracy of work. Or an old saying "Measure twice, cut once"

MEP 1st Fix First fix comprises all the work needed to take a building from foundation to putting plaster on the internal walls. This includes constructing walls, floors and ceilings, and inserting cables for electrical supply and pipes for water supply. Some argue that First Fix starts after the shell of the building is complete, and ends when the walls are plastered. Here is a list, in no particular order, of the elements of First Fix. Drain runs: must be downhill and straight Spare conduits: draw strings Soil pipes Copper pipes MVHR (mechanical heat recovery ventilation runs) Push-fit or other plastic piping Electrical back boxes Electricity cable runs Telephone, data and audiovisual cables Socket location Security Fire alarm Normal pipes Door bell Door frames Pocket doorframes Stair well: floating / cantilevered? Sound insulation Plasterboarding The list is not exhaustive.

🚧 Why Proper Mechanical & Electrical Pit Marking is Critical Before Pouring the Raft 🚧 In any large-scale construction project, precision is key—especially when it comes to the foundation. Before pouring the raft slab, marking mechanical and electrical pits is an essential step that can save time, money, and a lot of headaches down the line. Here’s why: 1️⃣ Prevents Future Disruptions: Mechanical and electrical pits house critical systems like drainage, plumbing, and utility lines. Accurate marking ensures these areas are accounted for, preventing the need for costly and time-consuming excavations later. 2️⃣ Enhances Structural Integrity: Misaligned pits can lead to complications with load distribution and may compromise the integrity of the raft. Precise markings allow for seamless integration of these systems into the overall structure. 3️⃣ Improves Coordination Across Teams: Clear markings ensure everyone—engineers, contractors, and sub-contractors—are on the same page. This minimizes miscommunication and reduces errors during the construction process. 4️⃣ Facilitates Smooth Installation of MEP Systems: Accurate placement of mechanical and electrical pits during the foundation phase ensures that systems can be installed efficiently, keeping the project on schedule. Common Mechanical & Electrical Pits/Bores to Mark: Drainage Pits Sump Pits Sewage Pits Plumbing Service Pits HVAC Duct Openings Electrical Cable Trenches Electrical Conduit Pits Firefighting System Pits Water Storage Tank Access Bores 🔧 Bottom line: Marking these pits before pouring the raft isn’t just a step in the process—it’s a crucial part of ensuring long-term success. When done correctly, it lays the foundation (literally and figuratively) for a smooth construction journey. #ConstructionTips #MEP #StructuralEngineering #ProjectManagement #RaftSlab #MechanicalPits #ElectricalPits #Foundations

BRIEF NOTES ON ARRANGING MEP SERVICES ABOVE THE FALSE CEILING #MEP coordination #False ceiling mep service We, MEP engineers in particular and Construction engineers in general, delivering huge projects involving dense MEP services often face the challenge of arranging the numerous MEP services in the ceiling void. Typical MEP services include following elements: 1. Ducting 2. Chilled water piping 3. Fire protection piping 4. Plumbing services (Water services/Drainage services) 5. Electrical containments services (Tray/trunking etc) for Electrical services Above services need to be accommodated with in the false ceiling void (space between bottom of slab/beam and top of false ceiling). To achieve this the MEP engineer prepares MEP coordination drawings along with detailed sectional views. The challenges can be categorised as under: 1. Installation easiness 2. Installation construction sequencing 3. Future serviceability 4. Codal/Legal requirements 5. Aesthetics General requirements, issues to be kept in mind are: 1. Design intent, usage, operation should not be compromised 2. Different voltage grades of cables should be accommodated in different distinct containments and physical separation to be maintained between them to avoid signal interference 3. Wet services such as fire protection, plumbing, chilled water piping etc should not run parallel exactly above electrical containments 4. Wet service piping should be avoided in electrical rooms 5. Independent support system to be ensured to each system with each taking support from slab/beams as appropriate 6. Junctions, tap offs/branch offs etc of services to be resolved regarding routing for trouble free installation 7. Gravity line be given preference over pressurised pipe lines as gravity lines require prescribed slopes for satisfactory operation 8. Trap doors/access doors should be kept for valves, dampers, electrical switches etc Hope you have found above notes interesting and useful! Please share your thoughts on this. Cheers to all.
