Thinking about relocating to Chicago for a new job? 🌆 Relocating to a new city, especially one as vibrant and bustling as Chicago, can be both exciting and daunting. As a Quantity Surveyor or Project Manager, there are a few key things to keep in mind to make your transition smoother. Firstly, research the local job market. Chicago has a thriving construction and real estate sector, with numerous opportunities for Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers. According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, employment in these fields is expected to grow by 8% over the next decade. This means plenty of opportunities to advance your career. Next, consider the cost of living. Chicago is known for its diverse neighbourhoods, each offering different living experiences and price points. From the upscale Lincoln Park to the more affordable Logan Square, there's something for everyone. Make sure to budget for housing, transportation, and other living expenses. Websites like Numbeo can provide up-to-date cost of living comparisons. Finally, immerse yourself in the local culture. Chicago is famous for its architecture, food, and sports. Whether it's catching a Cubs game at Wrigley Field or exploring the Art Institute of Chicago, there's always something to do. Networking events and professional groups can also help you connect with other professionals in your field. Relocating is a big step, but with the right preparation, it can be a rewarding experience. I know LinkedIn is where we post accomplishments… but we need to normalize and celebrate the journey that got us to our newest milestone. In the summer of 2014, during my summer break from my graduate studies at University of Toronto - John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, I found myself working at a meat factory. Yes, you read that right! 🙂 I had tried to make inroads into the landscape architecture profession without success. Despite months of applying for a job… I found myself in the cold room packaging beef and pork for my 3 months summer break. I will not lie; it was a little demoralizing because I had run my own landscape design company for 14 years in Kenya before embarking on my studies in Canada. Nonetheless, I was happy to be earning some money. So, to encourage myself on June 13, 2014, I wrote in my prayer journal “God will make a way”. Last week on June 12, 2024, exactly 10 years less 1 day, to that journal entry I got a promotion to become a Senior Urban Designer and I also found myself standing in front of my colleagues in Urban Design and Toronto Design Review Panel, a team of eminent architects and landscape architects. Lol! Double for the trouble 😊…? But on a more serious note, we need to celebrate the journey…. and on that note, I will add my meat packaging experience to my profile, I can do that too 😊. #landscapearchitecture, #urbandesign, #careers, #urbanplanning, #africandiaspora
