World Soil Day focuses our attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. 🌍 Protecting soil health and effectively managing the agricultural land that soils support is central to global food security. In the UK, a valuable tool that we have for understanding and protecting both soils and food security are the Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) system, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Land Classification for Agriculture system (LCA) in Scotland. These classification systems provide a standardised approach to identifying the soils and land that contribute the most to putting food on the table. 🌱 We need land to build more homes, and we also need land to support other important public needs such as green energy production. The ALC and LCA systems allow us to set priorities in the planning process to ensure that we protect the most valuable soils. ✅ Find out more and how we can help 👇 https://lnkd.in/ekwKnd3m

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) irrigated agriculture remains the largest user of water globally, accounting for 70% of fresh water use worldwide. With a growing population and more discerning diets demanding more calories and protein, and water availability being challenged by climate change, a strategic response to water management in agriculture is required. Martin Davies joins Jane Craigie's Science behind your Salad podcast to discuss how Nuveen prioritizes efficient water management to optimize water use across its farmland operations and to replenish over drafted aquifers. 🌍 Unforeseen rise in global water use and agricultural land: A call to action for sustainability A recent study has uncovered an unexpected and substantial increase in global water usage and the expansion of agricultural land. This alarming trend presents significant challenges to sustainable water and land management and impacts ecosystems, food security, and the planet’s resources. Why is this happening, and what can be done to address it? Chris Seijger (Wageningen Environmental Research) is shedding light on the data behind these trends and what it means for our future. The European Union has implemented a Soil Strategy over the past 3 years, highlighting the numerous benefits of healthy soils for people, food, nature, and climate. This strategy outlines specific actions to protect soils to mitigate climate change, improve adaptability, preserve biodiversity, ensure food security, eliminate pollution, and safeguard public health. Additionally, it aims to promote land reuse and reduce the need for new land cultivation. One of the key objectives is the restoration of degraded land affected by desertification, droughts, and floods. In essence, the EU emphasises the importance of black, fertile, and healthy soil as a crucial element in environmental protection and organic farming. By avoiding chemical fertilisers and synthetic pesticides, our products adhere to high-quality standards and offer a natural taste, making them an excellent choice for consumers. Therefore, we proudly promote the slogan: "Organic food from the EU - a good choice."

💧Be Water-Regenerative from Farm To Fork: The Ambition of Our New Water Policy! "The food industry must urgently consider water as a priority, as it is totally dependent on this precious resource. Starting to rethink our relationship with water is essential." Emma Haziza, hydrologist and PhD from Mines Paris - PSL ParisTech, Paris School of Mines. This quote particularly resonates with Bel as we take a new step in our commitment to #water preservation, a resource at the heart of our all activities, from dairy and fruit production to processing in our factories. Aware that about 70% of the Earth’s available freshwater is used for agriculture, we developed a Water Policy to preserve and restore this precious resource. Inspired from regenerative hydrology, our Water Policy is structured around 4 pillars: 🔎Measure our impact on water across the entire value chain and set targets 🚰Avoid and reduce quantity water withdrawals 💧Protect and restore water quality 💪 Strengthen the resilience of the Group and its ecosystem This comprehensive approach embodies our ambition to build a sustainable food model that respects planetary boundaries. 🤝As we are convinced that addressing these crucial issues needs a collective effort, we joined the “CEO Water Mandate” in June 2024, a United Nations Global Compact’s initiative that brings together business leaders committed to addressing global water challenges through responsible #watermanagement Discover the full extent of our Water Policy and our concrete commitments 👉https://lnkd.in/ecN_SgH9 #ForAllForGood #SustainableDevelopment

💬“The green design of the Common Agricultural Policy has improved. However, compared with the past, we haven’t seen substantial differences in the member states’ agricultural plans. We conclude that the EU’s ambitions for the climate and the environment are not matched at national level. We also think that key elements for assessing green performance are missing.” Read the full report on CAP Strategic Plans 👉 https://lnkd.in/ga8qkUi8

🌟 Excited to share that my latest research contribution titled "Exploring expert perceptions towards emerging pollutants and their impacts in reused wastewater and agriculture" has been published on journal of Agricultural Water Management. 📄 This paper dives into the crucial intersection of water reuse and agricultural practices, focusing on the risks posed by emerging pollutants. This research highlights the need for better understanding and management strategies to safeguard both food production and environmental health. 🔴 A big thanks to my dear Antonio Jodar-Abellan, and all other collaborators and experts who contributed to this work! Its open acess, so feel free to read more about the findings at: https://lnkd.in/e7JUhd5E #watermanagment #sustainability #wastewaterreuse #agriculture #emergingpollutants #environmentalscience

Effective catchment delivery will have to be at the heart of any workable government approach to recovering the health and resilience of our rivers, lakes and seas. There is a growing consensus that something more powerful than current catchment convening and delivery approaches will be needed. Where is this being done at the moment? How can examples of good practice be mainstreamed? We’re delighted to confirm a top-level speaker line-up for session three of A Fresh Water Future to understand what’s worked, how it’s happened, and what lessons might be taken forward in a more mainstreamed approach following the government’s Water Commission review. Chaired by ex-Environment Agency CEO, Chair of Water Resources East and Cambridge Water Scarcity Group and board member of The Office for Environmental Protection, Paul Leinster, session three will hear from: 📌 Jo Harrison, Asset Management Director, United Utilities on experience gained through The Natural Course project 📌 Guy Thompson, Managing Director, EnTrade on how to build high integrity environmental markets in the UK 📌 Wendy Brooks, Head of Environment, Norfolk County Council on the Norfolk Water Strategy Programme: scaling up investment in nature-based solutions 📌 Nick Mills, Director of Environment and Innovation, Southern Water on how community and nature-based solutions are being used to reduce storm sewage overflows 📌 Catriona Penny, Future Water Framework Lead, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on government’s areas of focus on strategic planning and catchment governance, and 📌 Matt Clegg, Environment Director, Binnies on how we can finance catchment and nature-based solutions and the state of nature markets in the UK. This exclusive conference is bringing the leading experts and cross-sector representatives together to discuss and shape the picture of how we can most effectively unlock healthy and resilient water bodies for people, nature and the economy.
