Many artists set goals such as obtaining a record deal, being featured on editorial playlists, or securing sync deals… but these outcomes are largely beyond your control. Even if you do everything right, your chances of achieving those goals are still very limited. It is better to set goals related to the steps you can take to enhance your chances of success, rather than focusing solely on the desired outcomes. What are the things that when you do them will increase your chances of obtaining a record deal, sync deal, or editorial placement? Set your goals around those things. Instead of saying, "my goal this year is to get a sync deal," you should say, "my goal this year is to reach out and pitch my music to 100 sync publishers." This shift in perspective allows for greater control. Focusing your energy on the things you can actually control, will always be a winning strategy. #music #musicbusiness #musicindustry #musicians

"2. If I’m king, I’ll require top executives of dominant music platforms to submit to a simple ear and music aptitude test: Can they hum back melodies after hearing them once? Can they play an instrument? Can they identify intervals and basic chords progressions by ear? (Hah!) Can they shake a tambourine without losing the beat? Can they even sing “Happy Birthday” in tune? Etc. etc. There are no penalties—I am a lenient monarch—but the results will be made public. If Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, wants to dominate our music culture, let’s see if he knows bugger all about it. Even better: Let’s televise this as a competition. It could be the dark twin of American Idol—maybe every week, we allow one or two CEOs to exit shamefully from the competition, but only after demonstrating their incompetence in front of a live audience. After a couple of seasons of this, companies will start hiring execs that love and know music. That can’t be a bad thing."

Great story today in The New York Times about recurring revenue programs like membership and the way they’re expanding renewable revenue streams for #artsandculture. The Cleveland Orchestra and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, along with friends at the The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra are innovating in the classical music industry, as are leaders at The Phoenix Theatre Company and many other theaters across the the US and UK. Worried about the revenue model? These cited leaders have it right: monthly recurring revenue, year over year without annual campaign “renewal” expenses, plus increased participation and philanthropy, create count-on-able income. Is it all good news? Not one specific marketing tactic meets ALL needs! The subscription isn’t dead—many, many folks still prefer having the arts they love booked into their calendar in advance. New Post: Believe’s Board Invites Warner Music Group to Make Them an Offer - https://lnkd.in/g7FutBgQ - Believe’s board of directors on Monday (Mar. 25) asked Warner Music Group (WMG) to submit a formal bid for the French music company after stating that French financial regulators found an offer by a group that includes Believe CEO Denis Ladegaillerie violated certain securities rules. WMG said earlier this month that it approached Believe in February with a non-binding offer to combine the two companies at a price of “at least” 17 euros ($18.60) per share. It now has until Apr. 7 to “submit a binding, unconditional and fully financed offer,” according to a statement from Believe’s board.  Related Believe Revenue Rose 16% in 2023 on Streaming Growth & Expansion in Developing Markets 03/25/2024 Soliciting a take-over bid to compete with an offer by the company’s own chief executive is uncommon and signals an escalation in the fight for control of Believe. In its statement, Believe’s board said the bid from Ladegaillerie and investment firms EQT X and TCV was “not compliant with the rules governing tender offers.” Ladegaillerie and the investors had offered to take Believe private at a price of 15 euros per share — or roughly 1.523 billion euros ($1.64 billion) for the company. Upon learning of WMG’s approach, the consortium tried to speed up the acquisition process by waiving a condition that the board’s ad hoc committee receive an independent expert report into the financial fairness of their offer. A review by the French financial regulatory body, Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), stated the group could not waive this condition. “The Board must permit…that all shareholders of Believe have the option to take advantage of the best possible offer, to the extent such offer is reasonably likely to be successful,” the board said in a statement earlier this month. Believe owns a large label services business, digital distributor TuneCore, publishing administration service Sentric and a stable of record labels including Naïve, Nuclear Blast and Groove Attack. The company’s business model is built around helping to develop artists and using digital marketing and distribution to impact local charts. The entertainment industry in Sierra Leone has witnessed significant growth and transformation over the past two decades, with local artists gaining more recognition both nationally and internationally. Two key figures who have contributed immensely to this progress are Prezo Colabo, the President of the All Stars Musicians Union, and Kao Denero, who serves as the Special Envoy on Entertainment and Investment. Each of these leaders has carved out distinct roles, advocating for the rights and development of musicians while promoting Sierra Leone’s entertainment sector on a larger scale. While the leadership of both figures has brought much-needed progress, there are challenges that remain. The industry still struggles with issues like inadequate infrastructure, limited financial support, and piracy. There is also a need for more formalized industry standards and policies to protect artists' intellectual property.
