Multiple studies evaluating the contribution of lower-body kinematics to pitch velocity and bat speed have found that quick deceleration and extension (or put another way- change of direction) of the lead knee was associated with performance in pitchers and hitters. Consequently, coaches and practitioners should ensure that individuals possess an adequate level of strength (eccentric to concentric) to facilitate optimal movement of the lead knee during pitching and hitting movements. If deficiencies exist, then training programs should be designed to address these issues and eventually bring about an improvement in performance. Check out video on using flywheels to train this component and the effects this training had on a pitcher’s fastball velocity over 6 weeks (there are other components such as timing and mechanics that go into this, but the foundation has to be there to build some of the other skills on top of).
