1. Shopper experience is paramount.
2. Reaching out to people and building personal connect matters.
3. Speak up confidently, don’t play small.
These are my 3 biggest learnings from the past three months working as a Branding and Marketing intern at Kellanova (formerly Kellogg’s) Singapore.
It was an enriching experience to work with my mentors, AC Sangalang and Ozden A., and learn from them about the intricacies of managing a global brand. I learnt that managing a consumer goods brand ultimately revolves around considering the shopper's experience at the shelf and online, and every branding decision should enhance this interaction. Secondly, I realised that when it comes to communication in a globally spread out team, the ability and initiative to reach out to colleagues you may not already know is crucial. Additionally, taking the extra effort to connect personally—whether via call or in person—can make a significant difference. And finally, I understood how important it is to voice one’s opinions, even as an intern - of course, doing so with respect, but not holding back from contributing ideas.
I got opportunities to learn about packaging, contribute to a multi-market packaging project, and assist with internal communication pieces. I was privileged to participate in external meetings with design agencies which offered me valuable insights into the collaborative process of branding and package design, emphasising the importance of branding at the shelf. Additionally, I had the pleasure of learning from Divya Aggarwal about digital marketing at Kellanova and the end-to-end process of media planning, which highlighted the growing importance of the digital domain in marketing. Throughout these experiences, I explored how consumer psychology plays a crucial role in shaping branding and marketing strategies.
Overall, I am excited to have discovered more about marketing and branding in the CPG industry, and realise that this field allows me to blend my creativity and people-oriented nature, with my academic interest in applied psychology. And, of course, the chance to participate in a cereal taste-testing session in my first week was an unforgettable experience! 😊
As I begin applying for graduate roles, I’m excited to bring the skills and learnings I have gained so far, to my future career, no matter the industry.
A special thanks to Shumit Kapoor for making available this incredible experience for me.

2moThe concept of “No” as a “Gateway” is interesting and helpful I think. In our improv and storytelling training courses for consultants and sales teams Neil Mullarkey and I run an excellent game that teaches you to see “No” as an “Offer” not a closed door. 💡
