Warringtonfire, which specialises in fire resistance testing for passive fire protection products, has increased its testing capacity to cater to the heightened demand for UKAS-accredited testing space from product manufacturers within the built environment and transport sectors. The enhanced testing capacity follows the recent announcement of Warringtonfire’s plans for a new laboratory at Birchwood Park, Warrington, which is due to open in early 2025. The £23m facility is set to become the UK’s largest built environment product testing laboratory, and will represent an 80% increase in size compared to the current facility. Following its opening, the current Warrington site will be transformed into a centre of excellence for reaction to fire testing. Jason Dodds, Vice President of Warringtonfire, comments: "The regulatory landscape for both the built environment and transport industries is incredibly dynamic and the need for manufacturers to test and certify their products is more pressing than ever. Continuing in the emergency planning theme - consider this - in the event of an emergency on your campus, or in your building - your Facilities Team will likely be called into service. Even if that's not "officially" a part of your plan. Think about it - hostage situation or shooter - who is the keeper of the building drawings? (David Trask 🎙️) is an amazing resource to make drawing and plans simply accessed and distributed, by the way. Imagine the swarm of press vehicles that will show up - you might have to create an impromptu parking area. Your EOC team needs an area to hold a press conference. Who are they going to task with security (if none on site), access, extension cords, parking (again). If there's a fire, your FM staff "really" knows where the ethyl methyl bad stuff is kept. Long story short, your FM Team will almost certainly be called on in the Response and Recovery phases of a disaster (and Continuity). Their training needs to be different than other folks on your site. Have you given them the tools that could literally save lives, or at the very least make activities look organized and planned for? Friends, today we're working on a new part of the puzzle: #FireSafety! We have a number of blocks which need to have further Fire Safety surveys carried out to identify any combustible cladding or EWI which needs to be remediated. Our early estimates are that the cost of these surveys is about £5000 per building and we have 60 blocks on the priority list. Is there funding available to help with these surveys? Let me know of any grants or post-Grenfell pots of funding that can mitigate the upfront survey costs. As a follow up, has anyone successfully put in #SHDF bids which specifically targets blocks needing fire remediation work? Could removal of combustible cladding be considered part of the enabling works? I feel like there is a bid to be made here, but happy to learn from your successes (or failures! The Grenfell Inquiry Phase 2 report published on 4 September was the culmination of more than seven years of work by the inquiry and followed publication of the Phase 1 report nearly five years ago. Within the large report, consideration of the lifts was a relatively small element yet occupying a chapter.
