Key figures like César Chávez, who championed farmworkers’ rights, and Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice, remind us of the courage and resilience that have moved America forward. Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, continues to inspire with her advocacy for workers’ rights, while modern figures like Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose musical talents and storytelling have transformed Broadway, show the limitless creativity and innovation within the Hispanic community. Today, Hispanic Americans contribute to all facets of society—from entrepreneurship and STEM to public service and education. At the heart of these contributions lies the value of family, community, and hard work, principles that deeply align with the American spirit. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s crucial to shine a light on an often overlooked yet significant challenge faced by Latin and Hispanic individuals: health disparities, particularly those compounded by Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Language barriers can significantly impact healthcare experiences and outcomes. For many in the Latin and Hispanic communities, LEP can lead to misunderstandings of medical instructions, lower quality care, and ultimately, poorer health outcomes. These disparities highlight the importance of culturally competent care, which involves more than just translation services. It’s about creating an inclusive healthcare environment where patients feel understood, valued, and respected regardless of their language or background. Efforts to address these disparities must go beyond policy discussions. They require actionable steps, such as providing linguistically and culturally tailored health education, recruiting bilingual healthcare professionals, and fostering an inclusive culture within healthcare organizations. By actively involving patients and their families in the conversation, we can bridge the communication gap, empower individuals, and improve health outcomes. This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s commit to not only celebrating the vibrant culture and contributions of Latin and Hispanic communities but also to advocating for equitable healthcare that recognizes and addresses the unique challenges they face. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage, don't forget it is also National Cholesterol Education Month. The age-adjusted prevalence of high total cholesterol (≥ 240 mg/dL) among adults aged 20 and over was high in Hispanic men (13.1%) surpassed only by non-Hispanic white women (14.8%). Newer data showed improvement in most racial/ethnic groups with a decrease to 9.3% in Hispanic men and only a slight increase in Hispanic women. High cholesterol is a major factor in the development of heart disease and stroke. 💡Monitoring LDL-cholesterol is a crucial part of heart disease prevention. Yesterday was such a memorable day, and leaving Connecticut was bittersweet. I had the chance to visit The Prospector Theater during their 10th anniversary gala, and it was nothing short of amazing. Learning about the rich history of The Prospector and Gemstone Farm from their visionary/founder was incredible. Their dedication to empowering professionals with disabilities is truly impactful, and it felt like I gained an extended family with their amazing team. I also had the privilege of speaking at the National Disability Institute’s Annual Convening alongside four phenomenal entrepreneurs with disabilities. We shared insights on topics like financial literacy, making pivotal career moves, diverse HR practices, and creating sustainable income streams. During my talk, I touched on how to take an idea to reality, breaking it down into three simple steps: 1. Find the Problem: Look past surface-level challenges to identify the real need, and figure out how to be the solution. 2. Find the Utility: Make sure your idea can serve multiple purposes—whether for business, community impact, or personal growth. 3. Find Your Tools: Use technology to help streamline and amplify your efforts. Both The Prospector and the National Disability Institute hold a special place in my heart. They are doing incredible work to empower professionals with disabilities, and I hope to be a part of their missions moving forward. Now, it is time to head to San Diego for the Fall Regional National Society of Black Engineers conference, where I will be speaking about Accessibility and AI.

Lets celebrate growth with strategy

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated observation of the ending of slavery in the United States. This holiday commemorates when more than 250,000 enslaved Black people received their freedom -- nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Today, Juneteenth is a celebration of the resilience and contributions of the Black community. We also reflect on the pivotal moments that have shaped our nation’s history and our ongoing journey toward equality.  As a company that is dedicated to health and well-being, we at Johnson & Johnson understand that true wellness includes equality, equity and justice for all. We foster an inclusive workplace where every voice is heard and valued. Healthcare has always been a part of my family – my mother was a nurse, my uncle a pharmacist, and all the summer jobs I had growing up were either at a hospital or pharmacy. With generations of my family dedicated to serving communities and improving lives, their legacy fuels my passion and commitment to ensuring J&J not only provides groundbreaking treatments, but also is intentional about ending health equity gaps that impact historically marginalized groups.  So on this Juneteenth, let’s reflect on how far we’ve come while acknowledging how far we still must go. ✊🏿🧡 CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH: Thank you to the Black Culture Collective at Orange County Social Services Agency for having The OCEA Hot Dog Wagon at their Juneteenth Celebration Wednesday, June 19! SSA’s Black Culture Collective consists of about 60 members, and is a revamp of the former African American Roundtable, which was established at SSA in the 90’s. The group assembled the lunch to celebrate Juneteenth—a recognition of June 19, 1865—when news of freedom reached enslaved people in Texas, marking a pivotal moment in American history. Juneteenth celebrates liberation, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality. “It was a great turnout. We had people coming from different locations—from Garden Grove, OCPC, Santa Ana—not just Eckhoff,” said Rebecca Polee, a Staff Specialist in Children & Family Services at SSA, and a member of the Black Culture Collective. “We sometimes get so involved and invested in the work and the service that we do. It’s nice to have this downtime, to engage, socialize, and bring some history.” Juneteenth became a federally-recognized holiday in 2021, and subsequently a State holiday. The recognition of Juneteenth as a holiday was prioritized by our membership and included in our proposal to the County during negotiations in 2023. The County initially refused, later offering Juneteenth if another holiday or 20 hours from PIP were forfeited. The negotiations team opposed these concessions and suggested alternative solutions, which the County rejected. Negotiations continued, highlighting that every gain requires trade-offs. If establishing Juneteenth as a holiday is of interest to you, please say so when the next negotiations survey comes your way prior to us returning to the table in 2026. Sixty years ago and so relevant today.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, a day of profound historical significance, I’m proud to reflect on the diversity within our community at Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group | Kaiser Permanente. One-quarter of our physicians and staff identify as Black or African American. This diversity is crucial, as 37% of our patients also identify as Black. Research consistently shows that diverse medical teams lead to improved outcomes for patients from various backgrounds. And in fact, studies have shown that our patients at Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group | Kaiser Permanente who identify as Black live nearly 10 years longer than the national average for Black Americans. This statistic underscores the importance of culturally competent care and the powerful impact of a healthcare team that reflects the communities we serve. On this #Juneteenth holiday, let’s reaffirm our dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
