The Mental Health Act reforms the 1983 act!! There is also a focus on providing 'mental health the same attention and focus as physical health'. With increased mental health support in schools. A majority of adults who live with mental illness first experienced levels of distress when they were young adults. Becoming adults who require a trauma informed approach where one ensures practices don't retraumatise but aid recovery. Dr Bessel Van der Kolk states in his book, The Body Keeps the Score, that ‘Trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.’ However when a child has more adults in their life that they trust and build secure relationships with then Adverse Childhood Experiences reduce. Thus this reform helps children have access to the support they need to cope through their mental health journey. We can see this is a step towards reduction in the stigma surrounding mental health. I wish I grew up in an environment where my emotional well-being was valued as much as my academic experiences.

🌟 Navigating the Intersection of Mental Health and Justice 🌟 For many years, I've had the honor of providing expert witness testimony in both criminal and civil court cases, shedding light on the complex interplay between mental health and the legal system. As a mental health expert, my role extends far beyond the confines of a courtroom. I am a voice for those whose struggles may otherwise go unheard—a beacon of understanding and advocacy in the pursuit of justice. In criminal cases, I work tirelessly to provide insights into the psychological factors that may influence behavior, helping to unravel the complexities of the human mind and inform legal proceedings with empathy and expertise. In civil cases, I lend my expertise to a multitude of matters, offering nuanced perspectives on mental health issues that may impact the lives of individuals and families. But beyond the legal intricacies, my work is driven by a deeper purpose—to advocate for the rights and well-being of those affected by mental illness, trauma, and adversity. I believe in the power of empathy, compassion, and evidence-based intervention to effect positive change in the lives of individuals and communities alike. As we navigate the intersection of mental health and justice, let us strive for a system that is fair, compassionate, and informed. Together, we can create a world where every voice is heard, every story is valued, and every individual is given the opportunity to heal and thrive. 💪🧠 To schedule a session with Dr Laura click here: https://buff.ly/2Va1qe6 #drlaura #drlauracounseling #MentalHealthAdvocate #MentalHealthSupport y #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthSupport #CounselingIsKey #MentalHealthMatters #ExpertWitness #MentalHealthJustice

Facing a loved one in mental health crisis can be incredibly stressful. The Marchman Act offers a legal avenue for involuntary commitment, but navigating it can be confusing. Here's a breakdown for Florida families: ✅Understanding the Criteria: The Marchman Act can be used if your loved one poses a danger to themselves or others due to mental illness. This could include recent threats of violence, self-harm, or an inability to care for basic needs. ✅The Process Explained: If concerned, you or a loved one can petition the court. A qualified professional will then evaluate your loved one to determine whether they meet the criteria for involuntary commitment. This evaluation may involve a medical examination and a mental health assessment. ✅Your Rights as a Family: Florida families have rights during the Marchman Act process. You have the right to be informed of the proceedings, to attend hearings, and potentially advocate for your loved one. Don't face this alone. Follow us for more legal insights and to learn how Ashley V. Gantt can help your family navigate the Marchman Act and support your loved one. #MarchmanAct #FloridaFamilies #MentalHealthAwareness
