There is a real shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs)! Nursing educators must do whatever they can to increase the number of RNs in the workforce. As an RN and a Nursing Professor, I understand how rigorous nursing school can be. Therefore, I've written a book to help brand-new nursing students succeed. The Nurse's ROCK! Head-to-Toe: The New Nursing Student Guidebook is a spiral-bound book designed to fit in a backpack and is an excellent companion resource for a new nursing student orientation or class. Also, it can be carried throughout the nursing school experience as a quick reference.

What is your big reason you became a nurse? Virginia Avenel Henderson (1897–1996) Henderson would become known as the “First Lady of Nursing” for her development of a theory of nursing that became fundamental to nursing education. As she stated, “The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge. And to do this in such a way as to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible.” She undertook the revision of a nursing text—Textbook of the Principles and Practices of Nursing—and the resulting work became a core text in hospital nursing schools across America. In addition, she oversaw the compilation of a four-volume reference guide to nursing research papers published between 1900 and 1960, called the Nursing Studies Index. For her pioneering work as a nurse educator, public health nurse, researcher and theorist, Henderson was inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame and awarded the Christiane Reimann Prize by the International Council of Nurses. As you read this, consider how your nursing career can influence all the people you interact with, whether they are fellow students, other nurses, your patients, or your community. What would you like to teach to patients or your colleagues? Source: Baylor University #education #nurses #healthcare #patientcare #AntonettaElizabeth

BACK IN THE DAYS I remember when I was a Nursing student, the way our training was could be likened to a glorified secondary school, at least that was what we thought then. This was so because our expectations of higher institution experience was dashed. The stories we heard from siblings, school mothers, senior friends were not anything close to what we were experiencing here. Our tutors ensured the standard was kept, punishment served as when due, nurses in the hospital were not left out when we missed our clinicals or arrived after they took over the wards. In fact the fear of Hospital based examinations will keep you on your toes during clinical experiences. Oh do I want to talk about some policies and healthcare workers attitudes we found strange? It was really a journey and these things spored up many questions I had about my beloved Nursing profession, of which I am still in search of answers for some. Hmmmm, time they say reveals things and surely I know better that I did not attend a glorified secondary school, I signed in for professional training, and that is what I got. I went there to be trained to be a Nurse and that everything there was tailored so that I can be a great Nurse. As I started practicing as a Nurse, I discovered that nobody hated me, nobody meant evil for me, nobody plotted my failure. If I ever felt or saw that happened, it was all an after math of two things; ✅ Either I stepped out of the expectations of me as a Nursing student in training ✅ Or my tutors and Clinical Nurses were just being human (exerting negative energy they felt at the moment towards me). Those trainings though painful and stressful made me a great Nurse today of which I am grateful for but who thought about my pains and frustrations and how I managed to live above them or am I really living above them? Dear Future Nurses can you relate🤷 Just know that you are not alone, whatever school is putting on you, you too will come out strong. Do you want to know how I pulled through my pain in Nursing school? Then let me know that in the comments section I am Udy Nkanta your Nurse Mentor, I help to build Impactful Nurses for the future and help them plot a successful Nursing career pathway. There's a lot of talk about the dangers of the nursing shortage, but one important piece of the puzzle that drives part of that shortage often gets left out—the lack of nursing instructors to teach future nurses. As data released by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in April 2024 revealed, there has been a steady decline in students enrolling in BSN, Master's, and nursing PhD programs. Translation? There are a fewer students preparing to be the future educators of our nation's nurses. Here's what that means for all nurses and why current nurses may want to take a second look at becoming a nursing instructor. (Hint: there are some work-from-home opportunities!) https://lnkd.in/gJWXn4mJ

The recent article by Nurse.org highlights a pressing issue in our healthcare system – the dire shortage of nursing instructors. As the demand for professional registered nurses continues to soar, we are faced with a bottleneck in education due to insufficient faculty numbers. This shortage not only hampers the growth of nursing programs but also impacts the quality of healthcare delivery nationwide. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has revealed a steady decline in student enrollment in BSN, Master’s, and nursing PhD programs. The ripple effect? Nearly 10,000 qualified applicants were turned away from higher-level nursing programs last year due to inadequate clinical placement sites, faculty, preceptors, and classroom space, compounded by budget cuts. I urge current nurses to consider the rewarding path of becoming educators. We must also advocate for better funding, improved work-from-home opportunities for instructors, and innovative solutions to expand clinical placement sites. Let’s join forces to address this crisis. By investing in nursing education today, we ensure a healthier tomorrow. #NursingEducation #HealthcareLeadership #NurseInstructors

After meeting Ethan Slocum, a senior nursing student and the President of the National Student Nurses Association, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own time as a student. I've already seen him at two high-profile events, sitting alongside prominent nurse leaders. Back when I was a student, my attention was consumed by writing nursing care plans 😬. Meeting him made me wonder—how can we engage more students in contributing to the profession, and just as importantly, how can we encourage more practicing nurses to get involved in professional activities?
