(Long post but worth the read if you want a "feel good" story) [UPDATE: Adding Kari Litzmann and Daloopa - thank you for your donation. ] The kindest thing someone can do is really "see" you and offer you a hand. For the last 3 years, I've worked to secure donations for a scholarship fund to help recognize women in university sales programs - because women are still underrepresented in sales roles in MOST industries and going from academia to corporate can be a tough jump for new sellers. In late 2020, I presented the idea of a $1000 scholarship that female students could apply for in the name of my friend Barb who passed away in 2020 - applicants would be in recognized sales programs (per the Sales Education Foundation) who lists 200 or so schools with sales programs around North America. But I always seemed to be trying to reach out for small donations here and there - raising money for it is always in the back of my mind. In steps long time friend and amazing community marketer Daniel Cmejla and we discussed the idea of consulting outside of work, in exchange for donations to non-profits like our #BarbaraGiamancoScholarshipFund. Dan posted on LinkedIn about it (follow him) and within hours he had a laundry list of companies interested in his marketing and community building magic. Within days, three companies had agreements with him and step one was a donation. I'm so thrilled and appreciative of Paramark.com, SalesOps.io and Glide for taking Daniel up on this opportunity and donating to our scholarship fund. Nine young women will benefit later in the year because of this, and it also caused new energy and donations. We fell short last year and had to give fewer scholarships but 2024 will be amazing. Daniel Cmejla you really are an ally and a friend. You didn't just talk, but you acted. I can't imagine how busy you've been outside of your normal crazy busy role at Apollo. This is sad to see, but I guess inevitable in today's non-phone answering world. This was my first real fundraising job! It was a coveted role at Bradley University and not one often given to freshman - but I got it! It was "old school." You sat in a phone bank and called alumni, asking about their Bradley experience, sharing a bit about yourself and then asking for their support! It's everything I love about fundraising - now almost 20-years into my nonprofit career - It's getting to know people and what they are passionate about, letting them know you as you build trust and rapport, and ultimately making the ask to support your mission! I've always said that every young person should at some point wait tables and work in retail. You'll always tip and always refold a shirt! I did both throughout high school and college. I would add to that... any young person who wants to get into the nonprofit world should find a way to have an experience like I did at The Bradley Fund. You learn about rejection (yes, some alumni said "no, thank you"), you get to celebrate success when a gift comes in (of course there was a bell to ring!), you build confidence in your asking ability, and you meet some of the most interesting people! The Bradley Fund may be "hanging up their phones for the last time," but the memories and gratitude I have for that experience will last forever. #collegejob #nonprofitcareer #fundraising

Re-reading "Quiet" - So Relevant to Fundraising As part of My Year of the Introvert, I'm re-reading Susan Cain's groundbreaking book, "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking." The book changed my life as an introverted fundraiser and I want to share Cain's moving messages with you. In my first video, I grab her self-admittedly unscientific list of traits that might give an indication of introversion. I touch on the first five (of 20) - all of which were a resounding "yes!" for me. The first is "I prefer one-on-one conversations to group activities." Totally me. Really struggle with large social activities - never want to be there. But the one-on-one I now know is what made me such a successful fundraiser. I relished in the one-on-one conversations with donors that helped build deep relationships between them and my organization. Another one is "I seem to care less than my peers about wealth, fame and status." That probably applies to nonprofit folks overall but she attributes that significantly to introverts. In fact, I've always said I'm more interested in my eulogy than my resume. Does that resonate for you? How many of the five resonate for you? Some of you LinkedIn folk were kind enough to respond to my online survey a few weeks ago and I wanted to report back. The survey explored the use of performance indicators and motivation in the non-profit heritage sector in the UK. The interesting thing about this slide is how many people weren't sure if their organisation used performance indicators, which seems like a missed opportunity.
