As part of Engineers Week last week, KPC collaborated with St. Columba’s NS to bring the fascinating world of Engineering right to the students' doorstep! Engineers Week has been created to introduce primary and secondary school children to the diverse world of engineering, by providing practical resources for teachers, and on-demand virtual engineering shows. This year, KPC Engineer David McCurtin visited the students of St. Columba’s NS to lead an engaging session on the fundamentals of Engineering through the Egg Drop Challenge! For the more junior students in the class, David also led a spaghetti and marshmallow tower challenge 🍝 Here's how it worked: 🔧 The students dove into the practical side of engineering by designing and constructing their very first containers using basic craft materials. 📈 The containers were then put to the ultimate test as they were dropped from increasing heights, all in an attempt to protect the egg inside. 🏆 After each drop, students had the opportunity to refine and enhance their designs, learning valuable lessons in continuous improvement. The grand finale? The student whose egg survived the highest drop was crowned the ultimate Egg Drop Champion! 🎉 This challenge isn't just about fun—it's about learning essential concepts in Material, Mechanical, and continuous improvement engineering. Kudos to all the students for their remarkable efforts! With such enthusiasm and creativity, it's clear that the future of STEM is bright! Engineers Ireland #StepsEngineersWeek

These hands-on experiences allow students to work with advanced machinery and tools, enhancing their understanding of core mechanical concepts. Through structured experiments and projects, students develop critical problem-solving skills and gain proficiency in the use of industry-standard software and equipment. These practical sessions reinforce classroom learning, also prepare students for the challenges of the engineering profession, fostering innovation and technical competence.

In this video, khalil elkhodary describes how he uses the Active Learning Classrooms at The American University in Cairo to deepen student learning in his mechanical engineering classes. He explains how the use of the large writable screens makes student learning more visible to him as a teacher, and he can lecture for less time then watch students while they do more complex problem-solving.
