Join us on the journey towards a more just and equitable society. In June 2020, we pledged to devote at least 65,000 pro bono hours through 2023 to breaking down the deeply rooted, systemic barriers in society that profoundly impact people of color. By the end of 2023, we devoted approximately 107,000 pro bono hours towards the Advancing Racial Justice initiative, 65% more than our original commitment. In recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we invite you to read our report, highlighting our commitment to advancing racial justice, combating violence, reforming criminal justice, protecting voting rights, and advocating for housing and economic justice. Rights for Everyone: Positive Obligations and the Protection of Human Rights 18 June, 10.00-16.00 Venue: BC-03-125, BC Building Ulster University York Street This one-day workshop for civil society, policy-makers and academics reflects on the current state of human rights protection, and in particular the role of positive obligations in the protection of human rights. It takes place within the context of differing and sometimes conflicting human rights agendas at different levels of government in the UK. Speakers will address the role of positive obligations in the framework of the European Convention on Human Rights and more specifically the contribution of the doctrine to human rights protection in Great Britain and in Northern Ireland. As well as examining the concept of positive obligations speakers will address how positive obligations can protect socioeconomic rights, civil and political rights such as the right to life and voting rights, and can protect groups liable to discrimination or marginalisation such as victims of trafficking, persons with disabilities and women. Confirmed speakers: Vladislava Stoyanova (Lund), Alan Brecknell (Pat Finucane Centre), Elaine Crory (Women’s Resource and Development Agency), Nuala Toman (Disability Action), Gillian Kane (Ulster), Caitriona Mackel (Ulster), Rory O’Connell (Ulster), Kevin Hanratty (Human Rights Consortium). As we observe Constitution Week, we not only reflect on the ideals of justice, liberty, and equality that form the foundation of our nation but also recognize the pressing need to extend these rights equitably to all communities. The reality is that Black, Brown, and BIPOC populations have historically been excluded from the full promise of these principles. The Constitution is a living document, and its true power is realized when we harness it to advance equity and ensure that every voice, particularly those from marginalized communities, is heard and protected. #ConstitutionWeek #JusticeForAll #BuildBackBlack #EquityInLaw #FMSGlobalStrategies #WBBA
