We recently welcomed a new employee, Maria Castillo, to the Lex Documents Brussels office, and I wanted to introduce her on LinkedIn and also share a really cool fact about her… that she’s a top professional frisbee player on team Belgium!
Though I love sports, I wasn’t too familiar with Frisbee, but since Maria is currently ranked 19th in all of Europe (!), I ended up asking a lot of questions about it, and learned about the rules of the sport…
(By the way, here’s an article about the top 25 female-matching players in Europe, where Maria is featured! 🤩https://lnkd.in/d8_NHnBm)
And the more we talked, the more I realized not only did I really start to appreciate professional Frisbee, but I also thought the rules were very applicable to business.
Specifically, these three rules struck a chord with me, so I wanted to share my thoughts about them…
🚫 NO-CONTACT
In Frisbee, players aren’t looking to physically take down their rivals or aggressively go after them for the sake of it. Any contact between opposing players is a foul. I like this because, while there’s a lot of competition in business competition, I actually like the idea of not wanting to “take down” our competition but instead focus on being OUR best, doing the best by OUR clients, and winning with strategy and skill.
👍 SELF-OFFICIATION
If there’s a foul or any other call, players are expected to take responsibility and self-mediate disputes as they come up. I thought this was pretty unique in a sport, but also really fantastic practice in terms of cooperation and communication. For me, in business, we try to do our best, take responsibility when we make mistakes, and figure out ways to problem-solve on our own.
🤝 A BALANCE OF COMPETITION AND RESPECT
While competitiveness can make for a great game, it is not the sole focus. A game where players respect each other, the rules, and have fun is most important. I think the same rules should apply at work - we should want to do well but not at the cost of others and make sure that the work we do is enjoyable!
