Meet Dominic Acocella, a Mechanical Engineering major set to graduate in Fall 2025 and the PR Coordinator of AXA. 🔍 Get to know Dominic: 🚀 What sparked your interest in engineering? "My interest in mechanical engineering stems from a young age, fueled by my fascination with invention, obstacle courses, and understanding mechanics within simple objects. Growing up alongside my father's projects in the garage, I was inspired by his hands-on problem-solving approach, which ignited my curiosity. Furthermore, my affinity for mathematics solidified my decision to pursue mechanical engineering as it perfectly blended creativity, problem-solving, and technical skills." 🚀 What skills or qualities do you believe are essential for success in your future career, and how are you working to develop them? "I firmly believe that adaptability, communication, and leadership are essential qualities for success in my future career. At FAU, I've honed my adaptability skills by navigating various teaching styles among professors. My time at AXA, particularly on projects like the CubeSat launch, has enhanced my communication abilities. Additionally, leading a youth group in Jensen Beach has provided invaluable leadership experience. These experiences have been crucial for my development and readiness for a successful career." 🚀 What role do you believe mentorship plays in a student's success? "Mentorship plays a vital role in a student's success, offering motivation and guidance throughout the challenging academic journey. One significant mentor during my time at FAU is Professor Edgar An, from my electro-mechanical devices class. His real-world experiences and beyond-textbook knowledge have been invaluable. His mentorship has greatly contributed to my growth and success." 🚀 If you could give one piece of advice to incoming freshmen, what would it be? "My advice would be to embrace every opportunity for growth and learning. College is not solely about academics; it's also about exploring new interests, meeting diverse people, and discovering passions. Stepping out of one's comfort zone, joining clubs, attending events, and trying new things are all invaluable experiences that enrich college life and shape personal and professional development." Designing engineering courses at level 3 that include digitalisation would be useful

📚🎓 Reflecting on my first 10 days at college – a rollercoaster of experiences and learning! 1. Days 1-3: I began my journey sitting alone in the middle row, feeling like a small fish in a big pond. 2. Days 4-10: A turning point arrived on the 4th day when I teamed up with a senior for an internal hackathon. We not only qualified for prelims but secured the first runner-up position, proving that opportunities abound when you take the plunge. 3. Learning Curve: Adapting to the academic rigors of engineering has been challenging. Understanding lectures and preparing independently has become the norm. 4. Labs and Assignments: I've navigated physics, electrical, and mechanical labs – the latter being particularly exhausting. Balancing coursework, I've sacrificed sleep to complete numerous assignments. 5. Welcomed to Engineering: As I shared my experiences with seniors, they simply smiled and said, "Welcome to engineering." 🛠️💡 6. Travelling is exhausting: I've to travel 1.5 hrs up and down from my home to college and this makes me exhausted. 7. Connected with seniors: It's feel so awesome to see when they like my post. The end of summer 2023 was a confusing time as I transitioned from mechanical to industrial engineering. I set out a list of goals to achieve by the end of the academic year. In high school, I believed that academia was not my strong suit. However, over the past few months, I have discovered how much I can achieve when I commit to my goals. My previous posts showcase some of these ambitions, but this goal, in particular, has defined everything else. I've imagined writing this post countless times since setting this goal, and I'm thrilled to share that through commitment, dedication, and competitive spirit, I secured a place on the 2023-2024 Dean's List. For the fall 2023 semester, I challenged myself to achieve a term GPA of 3.5 across four courses. By the end of the semester, I exceeded my expectations with a GPA of 3.83. Entering the Winter 2024 semester, I knew it would be challenging as it was my first time juggling six courses along with extracurricular activities and social life. Yet, I surpassed my own expectations again, finishing with an even higher term GPA of 3.95. This past year, I've consistently observed myself achieving and even surpassing my goals. This lengthy post is to share the fruits of dedication and hard work. I believe anyone can achieve this, as I have while breaking the stereotype of a typical engineering student confined to their room studying. It's been an exhilarating experience, and I could not have done it without the help and understanding of my friends, classmates, seniors, professors, TAs, family, and most importantly, God. As I gear up for the next academic year this fall, I hope to be back in 2025, writing this post again.
