Styrofoam can be a real menace for both our residential and commercial customers. One of the biggest issues with proper disposal of styrofoam is not knowing where to take it or how to properly dispose of it. It takes up space in a dumpster most recycling centers in Pinellas county won’t accept it. Styrofoam takes about 500 years to decompose if in a landfill. Luckily here in Pinellas county we utilize the Waste-To-Energy program where items such as styrofoam can burned to power over 45,000 homes and business. While burning styrofoam for fuel is one answer it may not be the best solution. We strive to recycle and repurpose as much as we can here at Junk Rescue Pinellas. Some companies such as Lifoam offer a styrofoam drop off where you can show up and dispose of your styrofoam. You can find other companies who offer services where they come to your business and will compact all the styrofoam onsite and haul it away. styrofoam once recycled usually ends up as coolers or insulation. Doing some summer sprucing up?! Use water-based paints instead of oil-based to protect our water supply. Leftover paint? Don't let it rain on our parade. Apply remaining paint to pieces of cardboard or pour into cat litter then dispose of in trash bag. You can also dispose of it at a recycling or hazardous waste site or event. We have a large kitchen .. and garden .. thank goodness as we have 7 yes 7 bins that we have to sort. They are like a badly designed camel - from bags with no structure to small boxes with lids that fly away in the wind, large wheelies and a tiny wheelie for food waste that has to be lined and then bags placed inside the err bag sorry liner… Imagine being old, infirm, tiny and not strong.. or just living in a small house / terrace / no front garden .. now … I love a sort and recycle but 7?? 6 inside plus garden waste.(£64 extra) oh and the bag of soft plastics that I have to drop in at Tesco or coop… Where do you put all these bins ? ? 🛌 Sofas, washing machines, beds.......all these items (and more) are classed as 'bulky waste'.    Twice a week our bulky waste crew go out to clear the bulky waste areas located on the estates. 🤔 A lot of the time these items still have plenty of life left in them - so how can you make sure they carry on being used?    💚 If your items are in good condition, British Heart Foundation will collect them from you, free of charge. ♻ There are plenty of platforms such as Freegle and The Freecycle Network or Facebook Marketplace where you can ensure items get passed on. ♻ Put a shout out to friends and family to see who may want your items.  ♻ Have you tried upcycling? In my own little understanding, the use of plastic is essential and we can't do without it but it has plagued our body, our #aquaticwildlife our environment #terrestialwildlife ........ For every 15 steps we take their are plastic bottles on the Street's which is part of the leading cause blocking drainage systems in our community. we must have all seen waste being thrown out of a moving vehicle, that is not the right way to dispose something that harmful It starts with US... instead of throwing or dropping it on the streets, look for the nearest waste bin and drop it inside. In another first for Barking Riverside, we were pleased to invite pupils from George Carey Primary School to unveil Barking Riverside’s brand-new cardboard shredder, in partnership with Envac. A further step towards delivering sustainable living, the shredder is the first of its kind in the UK. The 88-cm wide cardboard shredder can handle packaging as large as TV boxes, while remaining safe for children to use. The innovative solution is set to transform the way residents manage large volumes of carboard waste, preventing 105 tons of cardboard from ending up in landfills annually. The shredder is connected to Barking Riverside’s existing waste vacuum system. When residents have cardboard waste to recycle, they can feed it through the shredder opening. From there, high powered fans in the collection station will ‘suck’ the waste through the underground pipes, which can transport four cubic meters of material in 26 seconds. The Envac system has already enabled residents at Barking Riverside to recycle 3 times more than seen in comparable neighbourhoods in London. I am so, so tired of seeing a deluge of #singleUsePlastics pile up in and around #trash receptacles each day in my neighborhood #park. It genuinely confounds me that park #vendors (who directly profit from the #greenspace that houses their #business...) face no accountability when it comes to #pollution mitigation in the park they benefit from. ♻️ Please sign my #petition to kindly encourage that Park House—a fantastic and recently refurbished space in #Brooklyn's McCarren Park, that includes much-needed #publicRestrooms— stop the distribution of #plastic beer and coffee cups, and instead transition to a #circular cup or #compostable model. It is unacceptable that we allow and normalize #ecocide like this. We must simultaneously do the work to mitigate our own plastics consumption and also hold vendors to a higher standard.
