January 6, 2024 service update from GFL: We apologize for any confusion caused by previous messages. To be clear, GFL has suspended all collections for Monday, January 6 and will begin collecting Monday and Tuesday routes on Tuesday, January 7. We expect to collect some neighborhoods on their regularly scheduled days this week. For that reason, please have your trash and recycling set out on your regular service day. As always, some areas may experience delays because of safety and access issues. To allow us to resume normal service sooner, we will not be collecting yard waste or bulk items the week of January 6 but will instead focus all our collection resources on trash and recycling. We will collect double the amount of yard waste the week of January 13, along with Christmas trees that are cut into 4-foot lengths. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We will continuously monitor road conditions as we make service decisions that prioritize the safety of our employees and communities. Please continue to check https://lnkd.in/gHpq3eAe, https://lnkd.in/g5T2s4EF, or x.com/gflkc for service updates.

Missouri's Senate came to a standstill as lawmakers clashed over a bill that could halt a landfill project in south Kansas City. The proposed legislation would empower nearby communities to veto the landfill, highlighting the growing concern over landfill space running out. Residents in surrounding cities have voiced strong opposition to the landfill, citing health and property value concerns. However, some senators argue that the bill infringes on property rights and could set a precedent for government intervention. The debate underscores the intense lobbying efforts surrounding the landfill, with both supporters and opponents making their voices heard. While the bill remains unresolved, the issue continues to be a flashpoint in the legislative session. As discussions unfold, it's essential to consider the long-term implications of landfill expansion and the need for sustainable waste management solutions. 🌳♻️ #LandfillLegislation #MissouriSenate #Sustainability #WasteManagement

Congratulations to Nelson Brooke, Charles Scribner, and the entire Black Warrior Riverkeeper team on their major victory after a five-year legal battle against Drummond Company over the abandoned Maxine Mine, once Alabama’s largest underground coal mine! Decades of unchecked pollution, including acid mine drainage and coal waste, devastated the Locust Fork and the Black Warrior River’s health. In 2022, a court-approved consent decree required Drummond to clean up the site and fund a $1 million Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP). This landmark ruling set a powerful precedent for holding polluters accountable in Alabama. Now, thanks to these efforts, 366 acres at the Mulberry and Locust forks’ confluence are conserved, supporting the river’s resilience for future generations. Together, they are proving that with accountability and action, even the most polluted waterways can recover.
