Pizza savers are one of the plastic items where non-plastic alternatives exist, so we’re proposing phasing these out as we combat plastic waste in NSW. Plastic lollipop sticks, food tags for bread, bakery and pantry items are also on our phase-out list. Please Have Your Say on a range of actions we’re proposing by visiting bit.ly/HaveYourSayPlastic What else are we proposing? ◾ phasing out non-compostable fruit and vegetable stickers ◾ phasing out the release of helium balloons - bringing NSW into line with other states - plus the supply of plastic balloon sticks, clips and ties ◾ Better design standards so all single-use containers can be recycled Why? ◾ We want to drive down plastic litter by 30 per cent by 2025 and recycling more of our plastic waste will help us do this ◾ Globally, around 8 million tonnes of plastic leak into our oceans every year.

Coop Norway Introduces Innovative Bag Dispenser to Combat Plastic Pollution Coop Norway has launched a groundbreaking pilot project at its Obs Haugenstua store, introducing a first-of-its-kind bag dispenser to curb the excessive use of plastic bags. This initiative aims to reduce plastic waste and make customers more mindful of their bag consumption. Six bag dispensers have been installed at the self-service checkout, where shoppers must register their purchase for NOK 5.50 before receiving a bag through the dispenser. Harald Kristiansen, Communications Director at Coop Norway, emphasized the significance of the project: "We hope that increased awareness of plastic bag use will encourage customers to opt for sustainable alternatives." By implementing this innovative solution, Coop Norway is actively working towards the national target of reducing plastic bag use to a maximum of 40 bags per person per year by 2025, in line with its commitment as a member of Handelens Miljøfond. This effort is timely, as Norway increased the price of plastic bags earlier this year to NOK 5.50 to discourage their use. Kristiansen also noted the importance of ensuring all plastic bags are paid for: "We’ve noticed discrepancies between the number of bags purchased and those sold, and this new solution ensures that every bag is accounted for." Coop Norway, the country’s second-largest grocery player, is leading the way in innovative environmental solutions. With a 39% drop in plastic bag sales compared to two years ago, Coop's strategy is proving successful. For photo credits, thank you to ESM - European Supermarket Magazine. 🌿 Want to help keep our planet clean? 1. Reduce Single-Use Plastics Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to our environment. By reducing our use of single-use plastics, we can significantly cut down on the waste that ends up in our oceans and landfills. Try to: - Use a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water. - Bring your own reusable coffee cup to your favorite café. - Say no to plastic straws and use metal or bamboo alternatives. - Avoid plastic utensils and carry your own set of reusable cutlery. 2. Recycle Properly Recycling is a simple yet effective way to keep waste out of landfills and reduce our environmental impact. Make sure you: - Know your local recycling guidelines to avoid contamination. - Clean and dry your recyclables before putting them in the bin. - Separate different types of recyclables such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal. 3. Compost Organic Waste Composting is a great way to turn food scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich soil. This reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. You can: - Start a compost bin in your backyard or use a composting service. - Add vegetable scraps, fruit peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells to your compost. - Avoid adding meat, dairy, and oily foods to prevent pests and odors. #CleanEarth #GreenLiving #Sustainabily

Oops! 😱 Spotted on my walk around my neighborhood this morning. How many of you have been caught in this situation? Did you curse the critters or did you consider what you could’ve done differently to avoid this messy situation? Tbh I can’t tell where this pile of food scraps and plastic was planning on going. If it was for the green bin, I’m appalled by the amount of plastic food packaging contamination. EcoSafe Zero Waste offers certified compostable bags to contain food scraps safely, compostable sandwich bags to carry snacks, introductory programs that help explain to people how to do this properly, all the while avoiding plastic bag contamination. ✨To avoid this mess, separate your plastics from organics. ✨If you wouldn’t eat it, put it for trash or recycling. ✨Check your city’s website for what is accepted in the recycling system. For example, I keep a separate bin for plastic film packaging because we recycle plastic film separately in my city. What you do in the kitchen (or wherever you source separate your waste) matters most. Set up a system where reusing jars and bags, recycling tins and bottles, and collecting food waste is easy. Unfortunately, this photo indicates that this will all be going to landfill. It’s too mixed at this point. If anyone has suggestions on how to approach neighbours with waste separation tips, let me know. It’d be cool to have a fun & positive away to approach people about their trash. In my experience, people are quite sensitive about it and I wouldn’t want to embarrass anybody! #makecompostmainstream #compost #waste #SSO #30daycompostchallenge

Rethinking Water Drinking Choices For A Greener Society Tap water. Sachet water. Bottled water. Dispenser water. Water sustains life. However, the choices we make about how we consume water can have a significant impact on the environment. With increasing concern about plastic pollution and its environmental effects, it's crucial to rethink our drinking choices. A more sustainable solution is to switch from sachet water and plastic bottles to dispensed water. Like any change, we understand that adopting a new habit involves concerns and questions. Dispensed water, which can be sourced from tap water or reusable large bottled water available in supermarkets, is an eco-friendly choice, and we will consider the benefits: Cost-effectiveness The initial cost of purchasing a water dispenser is a valid concern. However, if you think of it, you only need to buy a water dispenser once, and as they use large water bottles, usually 5 gallons in size, you can eliminate the need to continuously purchase small bottled water, whose costs can add up at an alarming rate over time. Hygiene and Health Concerns Apart from the cost-effectiveness of dispensed water, many dispensers come with self-cleaning features and advanced filtration systems that provide clean and pure water, offering peace of mind to users. Also, users control the regular cleaning of dispensers, which can help prevent the risk of bacterial growth and contamination. Convenience versus Sustainability Grabbing a sachet of water or bottled water from a street vendor seems easier. However, consider the environmental impact of disposing of these plastics. Trading the health of our environment for the convenience of sachets of water and plastic bottles is a gamble we can't afford. Speaking of sustainability, you can easily return empty dispenser water bottles to where you purchased them in exchange for water-filled ones at affordable prices. Rewarding for reducing, reusing, and recycling, right? Plastic waste is a global problem threatening our ecosystems, marine life, and human health. Sachet water and plastic bottles contribute significantly to this issue, as they often end up in landfills, oceans, and waterways, taking hundreds of years to decompose. By opting for a reusable water dispenser, we can significantly reduce the amount of single-use plastic waste generated, leading to a cleaner and healthier environment for all. #EnvironmentalSustainability #RethinkRecycle #ZeroWasteLiving #SustainableWasteSolutionsProvider
