Happy Friday! I wanted to post something fun, but before I get to that, I know that with mass layoffs in the video game and tech industry right now, there's not a lot to be happy about. I think that it is extremely short-sighted of companies to lay off people for short-term gains. Exponential profit, stocks, and shareholders are not the things that make your company great. It's the people. It's their talent and their hard work day in and day out that builds a company, and it should be rewarded. I think the current layoff cycle is horrible and I hope we can all work towards something better. Back to why I posted: I wanted to share with you all the Global Game Jam game that my team and I made. Like many of my colleagues, I got into games because I love it, and I want to share that passion and joy with others by making games and seeing people play them. Each year I do a couple of game jams to hone some skills, be creative, and recapture that excitement for making games. This is the game my team and I came up with. A Friday thought - I don't understand why adults play computer games I just don't. Sure, as a kid, my brothers and me had a PC with games (Commando anyone?), and my kids now game on an XBox, Nintendo, PC etc. Same with games on my phone - I'm bombarded with enough 'stimulation' from a never ending stream of news and social media, 500+ £1 kindle books I honestly intend to read. Just doesn't appeal. Well, until this week when I came across a frankly brilliant video from Supercell , announcing the launch of their new game Squadbusters. Apparently a multi-player quest/ match play game, with favorite characters from their other successful game series. Nope, don't understand that either. Yet, I love how they brought it to life with a sprinkling of A-List stardust, tongue in cheek humour and a splash of Nickelback - fun, appealing and engaging. Supercell talked of 40m pre-registered users in the 5 weeks pre-launch, and 25 million downloads on day one alone - huge reach and opportunity for us digital marketers to engage with over time, just as we have done with Fortnite and other high engagement gaming platforms. So, maybe I do kind of get it........
