*Kendrick Lamar scream* "Nitrogen, phosphorus, chloride, oil and cyanide were among the 371m lbs of pollutants released into waterways by just 41 Tyson slaughterhouses and mega processing plants between 2018 and 2022. According to research by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the contaminants were dispersed in 87bn gallons of wastewater – which also contains blood, bacteria and animal feces – and released directly into streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands relied on for drinking water, fishing and recreation. The UCS analysis, shared exclusively with the Guardian, is based on the most recent publicly available water pollution data Tyson is required to report under current regulations. The wastewater was enough to fill about 132,000 Olympic-size pools, according to a Guardian analysis." 🙃Excellent coverage from Nina Lakhani for The Guardian US: https://lnkd.in/eq6ZajdT #WaterPollution

A recent study found nitrogen, phosphorus, chloride, oil and cyanide were among the 371 million pounds of pollutants released into waterways by just 41 Tyson Foods slaughterhouses and mega processing plants in between 2018 and 2022. The contaminants were reportedly dispersed in 87 billion gallons of wastewater – which also contains blood, bacteria and animal feces – and released directly into streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands relied on for drinking water, fishing and recreation. The water pollution from Tyson was spread across 17 states but about half the contaminants were dumped into streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands in Nebraska, Illinois and Missouri. The recent research is only the tip of iceberg, as it includes water pollution from only 1 in 3 of the corporation’s slaughterhouses and processing plants, and only 2% of the total nationwide. #insurance #underwriting #insuranceindustry #reinsurance #emergingissues

Forever Chemicals – PFAS, and toxins such as dioxins, PCBs in sludge and farmlands - Municipal wastewater treatment plants are an important link between the technosphere and the environment. The outgoing water and sludge are routes for release of many substances to the environment and exposure. During the treatment process nutrients, from the wastewater accumulate in the sludge, which should therefore be returned to productive use in a circular society. Unfortunately, substances that are harmful to the environment and health also accumulate in the sludge, which makes sludge critical to analyse to detect new environmentally hazardous substances and to determine spatial trends for priority substances hazardous to the eco-system and health. Difference Maker | Managing Director US Row Crops Southeast @ Nuveen Natural Capital | Equity Management Leader
As South Florida grapples with challenges like sea-level rise and storm events, officials are proactively addressing the issue by transitioning thousands of septic tanks to sewer connections. This shift is crucial as aging septic tanks are prone to failure, potentially leading to contamination of our precious drinking water sources. Understanding the necessity of this change is key to safeguarding our environment and health. Septic tanks, while effective in treating wastewater, were not originally designed to accommodate rising groundwater levels. To truly make a difference in cleaning up our water systems, it's imperative that we focus on source control. This involves transitioning from septic to sewer systems, continuing to implement Best Management Practices to reduce agricultural pollution, and educating individuals on responsible fertilizer usage or even opting for native plantings that eliminate the need for excess chemicals. By working together and making these conscious choices, we can all contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for South Florida's water resources. #NutrientRunoff #WaterQuality #EnvironmentalConservation #WatershedManagement #SustainableFarming
