Did you know that today is World Water Day? As I sit at my desk drinking clean, City of Portsmouth, water, I recognize my privilege and am blown away by some of the numbers presented by the UN: 2.2 billion people live without safely managed drinking water services. 153 countries share water resources. Yet only twenty-four have reported cooperation agreements for all their shared water. 3.5 billion people live without safe toilets. "Public health and prosperity, food and energy systems, economic productivity and environmental integrity all rely on a well-functioning and equitably managed water cycle" Maybe I should, but I don't have a call to action on this topic. It describes how developing and maintaining a secure and equitable water future underpins prosperity and peace for all and how poverty and inequality, social tensions, and conflict can amplify water insecurity. 💡💡 Thanks to UNESCO & United Nations Water for highlighting the Women in Water Diplomacy Network as a good example of inclusive and participatory transboundary water cooperation platforms and processes in the 2024 World Water Development Report. 'The Women in Water Diplomacy Network seeks to connect and engage women in decision and policy-making and as water experts by developing their capacities in water diplomacy, negotiation, mediation, peacebuilding processes and conflict prevention. It also aims at building the trust and interpersonal relationships required to support cooperation at every scale by identifying new opportunities for cooperation, and by improving approaches to multi-stakeholder cooperation and inclusion in transboundary water dialogues.'

This is a tragedy and unfortunately, representative of a much wider and deeper problem. Urgent action must be taken across the UK to reclaim our roads, our public spaces, our rivers, our coasts, and our countryside, from the scourge of pollution. We need visionary Government action to restore communal pride in the environmental aspects of our society. Key elements must include: - Properly enforced legislation to make it extremely costly for individuals and companies to pollute - Investment in rubbish clearance and pollution control - A Government which promotes community values and which tackles the underlying malaise and dissatisfaction experienced by many people living in the UK.
