‘Our best tool to drive change is visual storytelling’ My 5th and final graphic from SailGP's #ChampionsforChange event in New York captured a stunning talk from Shireen Rahimi - underwater filmmaker, National Geographic Explorer, and founder of Lightpalace Productions The power of storytelling was in full effect as the audience was invited to reflect on the stark reality of where we are headed, the pressing need to restructure our economies, and to find new stories that reshape how we as a species treat the natural world on which we depend. You know, The Big Stuff. ... And there are solutions out there - the potential of blue carbon or climate friendly aquaculture of regenerative ocean farming (think protein-rich, seaweeds and seafood that needs no feed, fertiliser or freshwater) Its incredible, its all there for the making, and where human ingenuity meets caring values, a better future actually is reachable. ⛵ As Shireen said, “imagine if governments and markets could relate to nature in the same way that SailGP does through its Impact League?” What if restoration, preservation, and the principles of community and equity that underpin that were the metrics for success and reward? 🤷♂️ Because at the end of the day, this is about survival - which, surely, is the ultimate metric. If you’ve been following my posts over the last few days you’ll get a sense of how moved I was by the talks I visualised that week. I’ve got two pretty small kids, and two pretty old parents and while I’m excited by the possibilities of new technology, more and more I'm just as amazed by the small wonders of nature all around us. I find myself just watching insects do their thing and think ‘it would take humans FOREVER to make that - and if we did, we would be SO pleased with ourselves.’ 😂 So proud to be working with SailGP on Champions for Change. ➡️➡️ WHAT'S THE PROBLEM❓ ⬅️⬅️ 🐟 Anchor dragging poses significant risks to maritime safety and the environment. Approximately 5% of insurance claims are due to dragging anchors, and one company reports that 57% of all marine claims by value involve grounding or collisions, often caused by dragging anchors. This issue affects various vessels, from superyachts to merchant ships, and has severe consequences. For instance, dragging anchors can lead to accidents, endangering the safety of the crew and passengers. 🌱 Moreover, dragging anchors cause substantial environmental damage. About 1/3 of all damage to subsea pipelines and and subsea cables are attributed to dragging anchors, as seen in the 2021 oil spill in Huntington Beach, Los Angeles. Anchoring impacts marine ecosystems, particularly posidonia meadows, which suffer long-lasting scars from heavy anchors. These meadows can take over a century to heal, highlighting the significant environmental threat posed by improper anchoring. ⏰ Current anchoring solutions are inadequate, often providing delayed or false alarms, leaving the crew unaware of real-time anchor dragging status. This delay can result in groundings, collisions, and extensive damage to the marine environment. Despite advanced naval navigation equipment, crews cannot accurately determine if, how much, and how fast an anchor is dragging in real-time. ⚓ AnchorGuardian addresses these critical issues with a disruptive, patented technology that offers real-time, fail-safe monitoring and immediate alarms with sub-meter accuracy.
