When crafting a pitch deck for your startup, it's easy to get lost in the countless examples and templates available online A quick Google search will show you countless successful decks to draw inspiration from. But here's the catch - while those decks can provide a valuable framework, it's important to remember that they were created during a different era of the #startup scene Twenty years ago, in the early 2000s, the startup scene was in its early stages. Y Combinator's first batch had around 25 companies, compared to the hundreds of startups they incubate today. The focus was less on presentation and more on the content… but times have changed, and so have the expectations Today, we have advanced graphic capabilities and tools basically for free. There's no reason why your deck shouldn't reflect that, as the content is what truly matters #Investors literally see hundreds, if not thousands, of decks each year A well-structured, professionally presented deck can make you stand out from the noise Originality is important as well… the companies that truly disrupted industries, like Airbnb and Coinbase, didn't do so by copying others They were pioneers They brought something unique to the table When creating your deck, use the frameworks available but don't lose your originality in the process. Your startup's north star metric: the guiding light in the data cosmos. This isn't just another KPI. It's THE metric that best captures your core value proposition and predicts long-term success. For Airbnb, it's nights booked. For Spotify, it's time spent listening. Finding your north star? Start with your user's 'aha moment'. What action signifies they've truly experienced your product's value? That's your beacon. Once identified, align your entire team around it. From product to marketing, every decision should orbit this metric. But beware of tunnel vision. Your north star shouldn't eclipse other important metrics. It's the captain, not the entire crew. Remember, as your startup evolves, your north star might shift. Stay flexible and ready to recalibrate. In the end, your north star metric isn't just about measuring success—it's about creating a shared language of value across your entire organization.

Especially if you aren’t Elon Musk or crafting the next AirBnB. That’s the problem. It doesn’t always feel open to us. We’d rather play it safe and try to be excellent at the thing that we do, probably with a fairly similar positioning, business model and even set of marketing messages to our closest competitors, or people one step ahead. When I first started my business, there is absolutely no way I’d have said “yeah I’m building a business I can exit in 5 years”. Or, “it’s just me now, but the plan is to build an agency.” Mortifying. What if I failed? It’ll just be a small thing, but that’s ok because that’s all I really need. I would imagine Elon didn’t worry in the same way. A disruptive mindset is important at whatever stage of business you’re in, if you want to create something that excites you (over the longer-term), is driving forward positive impact in the world and is valuable, beyond you hustling. Whether you come up with an idea that disrupts your category, gives you access to a difference space entirely, inspires you a different set of marketing messages to talk about what you do, or even a groundbreaking client experience, this is your difference x1,000,000 and it really matters.
