How do Hedge Funds make money? Well, there’s something called the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH). If you really take it at face value, there is no chance you are ever going to trade or to make money in the market. The EMH is an elegant framework but it needs a lot of assumptions to hold. Hedge Funds make money by exploiting situations in which the EMH does not hold. As it happens there are many such situations. Exploiting little market inefficiencies and the implied anomalies or statistical patterns is enough. You just have to be right 51% of the time on a very large number of trade. Not 100% right on a few trades. That’s the lesson from Jim Simons , the Lord of the Algorithms. It also requires a lot of discipline and consistency atop compute and brain power. #RIP Jim Simons
