On DC3 we conducted the Marshmallow challenge as our first team-building activity of the year.   The Marshmallow Challenge, for those who may not be familiar, involves teams working together to build the tallest freestanding structure using spaghetti sticks, tape, string, and a marshmallow in 18 minutes. The challenge is that the marshmallow must be placed on top, and the structure should be able to stand on its own.   During the challenge, we honed collaboration, communication, creativity, and adaptability. After 18 minutes, we measured our towers to determine the winner and reflected on our efforts. Questions about leadership, strategy, and adaptability guided our lessons learned. The question now was what is our marshmallow? We identified our "marshmallow" as collaborating to meet productivity goals across departments, reinforcing that we are the elements holding it together. We encouraged our team to apply these lessons learned to our everyday work.

Aligning the leadership team with the new strategy is vital, employing a "slow, slow, fast" approach: set the framework, analyze capabilities, and then act swiftly. Balancing the replacement of resistant leaders with retaining adaptable ones is essential, sometimes requiring external evaluations and coaching. Transparent conversations can convert resistant executives into allies. Avoid over-reliance on former colleagues to prevent favoritism perceptions. Strategic talent management involves recognizing operational and innovative capabilities. Clear board communication and alignment on expectations are crucial for driving successful transformation without destabilizing the organization.

It was great spending the week in Sunny Florida (man, was it hot!) speaking with Vistage Florida Georganne Goldblum's executive peer groups.
