A scientist at a climate conference hosted by Al Gore was asked what he’d spend $1m on if he got some extra funding. His answer might surprise you… He said - not more research, but more opportunities to engage like the Climate Reality Conference they were at. He talked about how the science is clear - we know enough already. What we now need is the people with the soft skills to help people ACT. This might feel like an obvious and accepted fact within the sustainability community… …Nonetheless the culturally held belief that 'more knowledge is the answer' blocks people working in the space from using the skills that have the potential to make the biggest difference. Like the client of mine who is fantastic at injecting fun into serious topics. He was writing that skill off as not valuable or relevant to creating change. Blocking its use rather than optimising for it. And he’s not alone. I see it with SO many other highly capable sustainability professionals too. It blocks them from spotting opportunities to use those soft skills alongside the knowledge they hold. So, yes, more knowledge can SOMETIMES be helpful but please don’t let your focus there obscure the value you bring with your softer skills too. P.S. 21 HOLISTIK at Climate Week NYC! 🌍 We had an incredible opportunity to engage with companies, innovators, and NGOs at NY Climate Week 2024—all working together to take bold action for climate and nature! As proud United Nations Global Compact partners, we were honored to lead a workshop on Science-Based Targets at the UNGC Leaders’ Summit 2024 event in the Javits Convention Center. Alongside Lucas Ribeiro, we presented an overview of the Science Based Targets initiative, did a tools walkthrough and encouraged participants to resolve several hypothetical company target-setting exercises. Also, Fernanda Delgado walked us through the FAQs asked in the UNGC's yearly Climate Ambition Accelerator. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gkKhjAr 🚨 In the session, we also heard and discussed key challenges that companies face: - Developing comprehensive GHG inventories (including challenges with scope 3 measurement and impact tracking) - Strategies to build the business case and convince top management - Balancing emissions reductions with business growth At 21 HOLISTIK we recognize these challenges but remain optimistic. Smart strategies like GHG accounting software and management tools, supplier training, and climate advocacy for stricter regulations can drive real progress. We also had the pleasure to count with the participation of Lígia Ramos, SBTi’s Regional Lead for LATAM, who gave closing remarks and shared important updates, such as SBTi’s Net Zero Standard Review Process and Scope 3 Discussion Paper. The Atlantic Economic Council has written extensively on the importance of good regulation. One area where this is particularly important is for green investments to support the transition to net zero emissions. Investors need regulatory clarity and certainty before making what are usually large, long-term investments. Lana Asaff articulates this in her post.
