For DAZED Magazine I spoke with Elizabeth L. Block, PhD about her latest book unpacking the history and power of hairdressing, "an area that I believe will be a core tenant of women’s history as central to scholarship as politics and education." We discussed the value of women's hair in the 19th century, the impact of era specific etiquette and why, "you can’t do hair studies without paying attention to the racism of how women’s hair and men’s hair was regarded, especially in the United States." https://lnkd.in/eh5DWwhy

I absolutely have to write on this... I know I am a branding coach and I insist my clients to be well groomed. But a major aspect about branding is staying authentic and defining your own rules. Rules of self confidence and appearance. When a Class 10th student, tops the state, its appalling to see how people are trolling her for her facial hair. I mean seriously!! This girl must have spend her days and nights, to ace her exams. But no, what is highlighted is her facial hair. Something which is superficial. Aren't we shattering her self confidence by trolling her instead of appreciating her efforts! It is time we shatter these beauty standards and let people decide their own terms of confidence. What are your thoughts on this? #grooming #selfconfidence

I like to practice what I preach. As an educator working in the salon, with clients is essential. I teach stylists salon friendly techniques, that improve their work in salon within commercial time frames. Which would be impossible if I didn’t work that way myself. One day a week in salon, averaging 10 haircuts a day, keeping it real. #hair #haircut #haircutting #haireducation #haircuttutorial #haircuttingvideo #haircuttingeducation #haircuttingvideo #haircuttingclass #haircuttingeducation #haircuttingtutorials #haircuttingtechniques #cutwithconfidence

As an educator it’s my job to find the easiest, most efficient way to get the best results for my students. There is a huge variety of techniques you can use to cut any haircut but here’s why we teach stylists to cut their line underneath the comb. 1️⃣ It ensures even tension throughout the section 2️⃣ You can make sure you don’t use to much tension which could cause unwanted graduation in the line 3️⃣ Stops you unintentionally elevating the hair 4️⃣ Cutting under the comb as apposed the fingers prevents a rotation in your finger that results in the internal lengths of the hair being cut shorter Try it and let me know what you think…. #hair #haircut #haircutting #haireducation #haircuttutorial #haircuttingvideo #haircuttingeducation #haircuttingvideo #haircuttingclass #haircuttingeducation #haircuttingtutorials #haircuttingtechniques #cutwithconfidence

▪️EDUCATORS ▪️ Comment EDUCATE for my free guide on building your education business. Teaching students to work neater, and cleaner when cutting hair has been a staple part of our education. Doing it in a time efficient, salon friendly way to reduce their service times and ultimately be more profitable takes it to another level. Spending 20 minutes sectioning the hair into 16 zones will definitely help you to understand shape and create beautiful haircuts. But…… it’s not a reality many of us can afford in salon life. Most stylists work on either 45 or 60 minute haircut appointment times so the way you work needs to be efficient. Always remember to make it realistic, relatable and repeatable when teaching any class. #hair #haircut #haircutting #haireducation #haircuttutorial #haircuttingvideo #haircuttingeducation #haircuttingvideo #haircuttingclass #haircuttingeducation #haircuttingtutorials #haircuttingtechniques #cutwithconfidence

If you missed the news in Dec 23, NY state passed a new law requiring all beauty school to train their stylists on textured hair. ‘The main goal is to diversify cosmetology school education in order to equip all students — regardless of race — with the knowledge to work across every hair texture’. I only once let a white person do my hair. I was attending a wedding, and again, there wasn't Black hair salon in the area. She did an ok job at the time, but she also made me sleep with conditioner on to ‘soften’ my hair before attempting to blow-dry it. Again, it is again interesting that we have to wait until 2023, for such thing to happen: considering that It’s believed that around 65% of the United States population has textured hair — defined as kinky, coiled, curly or wavy hair — (qcnerve) It’s clearly not just a black people problem. What is happening in NYC will likely spread across the country… very slowly I expect. Now the bill has some weaknesses it seems, according @cutitkinky (check her out on instagram): what exactly will be taught, how by whom? But it’s a step in the right direction to have a more inclusive and diverses beauty industry. Maybe I let a white person do my hair again one day… who knows 😂 #representationmatters #inclusionmatters #blackhair #texturedhair #nycbill #naturalhair
