It is interesting to see the power of LinkedIn. Below is an article on how hospices are in their worst financial position for 20 years and are seeking engagement with the government to discuss the issue. They need 12,000 signatures which they are close to collecting. It took 30 seconds for me to complete. Who knows what lies ahead in our own lives? I would be much happier knowing thriving hospices will be around if I needed them. https://lnkd.in/eD2x7G37

This is a brave and bold step for Royal Trinity Hospice, Princess Alice Hospice and St Raphael's Hospice to call out their local NHS Integrated Care Board for what in effect are real term cuts to their funding (which is already less than 30% of what it costs to run their services) which is leading to reduced care and support being available to dying people. My colleagues and I at St Helena fully support them and their well articulated case that this is a false economy for the NHS which will lead to lower value and poorer outcomes for dying people and their families, higher costs for the system, and longer waiting lists because people will die in hospital that could have been cared for at home or in a hospice. Hospices are just part of what is needed to ensure population needs for palliative and end of life care are met in full, but they are a vital part. Despite best efforts to innovate in income generation and in new ways of working there is only so much they can do. There really ought to be a proper sense of partnership between the NHS and hospices (and indeed wider VCSE) in all ICBs with fair funding recognising the enhanced population and system outcomes hospices can deliver. It is about time the Government and the NHS stepped in to ensure ICBs meet their statutory obligations under the Health and Care Act in a meaningful way, and that they recognise the valuable contribution hospices make in subsidising the NHS triple aim (often to be honest more effectively than some NHS services themselves).
We offer our heartfelt support to local hospice St Raphael's Hospice whose colleagues face imminent reductions to their services and staffing levels due to the lack of increased NHS funding for its services from the South West London Integrated Care Board. Today we have issued a joint statement with St Raphael's and Princess Alice Hospice to highlight the funding challenges all UK hospices are facing as costs rise at a rate far greater than the NHS funding contribution we all receive. With the proposed Hospice CARE Act, limiting inpatient respite to five days per period and introducing a 15-day transitional respite, our industry faces both opportunities and challenges. These changes aim to improve care quality and manage costs but will require us to adapt our staffing strategies to ensure seamless patient care transitions. How do you foresee these changes impacting your organization and patient care? Let's discuss how we can navigate these shifts together.

We are deeply saddened to hear that yet another hospice is being forced to cut services and make redundancies to secure its future. St. Catherine's Hospice in West Sussex announced today that they must save £1.5 million, putting 40 clinical jobs at risk. Our thoughts are with the hospice and the families they care for during this difficult time. Today's news brings the total to six hospices across the UK that have confirmed they are planning cuts to their services. It is clear that the funding of our sector requires urgent review. The government has expressed its commitment to moving more healthcare into the community, ensuring that patients and their families receive personalised care in the most suitable setting. Hospices, including ours, are perfectly positioned to ease this burden on the NHS. However, allowing these essential services to be scaled back is counterproductive. Our CEO Iain Cameron's response to this sad news is “Whereas the state of national finances has been well publicised by the new Government, the stark fact is that most hospices have been grossly underfunded and underappreciated for decades. Closure of more services, by another hospice this week is truly heartbreaking both for patients and families in that community, but for the incredibly hardworking and dedicated teams working in them. The hospice sector is crying out for a fairer model of funding, and without it, as a nation we are sleepwalking into the biggest health crisis of a generation.” Now more than ever, we urge you to support your local hospice. Whether or not you or a loved one has used our services, your support is critical to our long-term sustainability. Without it, we may not be here when you need us most.
