Although the enlisted force comprises 80% of the U.S. military, out of the 28 U.S. Presidents who served in the military, only one ever served the entirety of their service in the enlisted ranks. James Buchanan – that's it. When I was a Staff Sergeant, I met Chuck Hagel, the first and only confirmed Secretary of Defense to ever serve as an enlisted military member. In earlier periods of U.S. history, officers often hailed from the upper echelons of society. These social and economic connections likely provided the essential networking and financial backing, a kind of societal privilege. However, this paradigm is changing. I've spent my entire career wearing the chevrons of an enlisted Marine, and I couldn't be more proud. When I browse LinkedIn, I see former enlisted service members accomplishing INCREDIBLE feats as CEOs, billionaires, senators, and much more. We represent the working class of the military and often hail from challenging backgrounds, single-parent homes, public schools, rural farmlands, and inner cities. Yet, every day, through hard work, we climb the socio-economic ladder. We often provide better for our children than what was provided for us. We epitomize the heart and soul of the American Dream. We are the often the reality check to the officers we serve, we are a representation of those deep in the fight everyday, and we lead right alongside the officers we work with from a position of personally earned experience. So, for all those on LinkedIn who aren't in the military: when you encounter someone who has worn chevrons, someone who enlisted in the military, know that you're looking at an individual who can not only lead but also follow. They aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and often have worked from the bottom to earn everything they possess.

Wayne, oddly enough, I am reading a fabulous new book, "Lincoln's Mentors", by Michael J. Gerhardt (2021, Harper-Collins), and in Chapter One the author notes that Abe Lincoln, who was first voted Captain in his Volunteer Black Hawk Company (pages 43-48 I think), but later, following the advice of one of his mentors to gain experience as both a Leader and a Follower, served a term as an enlisted Soldier. As I recall, the term of that enlistment was a bit fuzzy but nonetheless was surprising, as most of us assumed that Lincoln only served as a Captain - elected by his peers and the source of lifelong pride by him. I highly recommend this book, which I quite discovered by accident as I was searching for another newly-authored book about our most distinguished President. Amazon carries it.

Truman enlisted in the National Guard, he was later commissioned and had time in the officer ranks too, but did have formative years as an enlisted Red Leg

Not only was Chuck Hagel Enlisted, he's a 2 x Purple Recipient. Enlisted merit and undeniable feats are breaking records beyond the battlefield in various industries and professions. Why? It's attributable to the discipline, perseverance, and organizational leadership Enlisted Service Members embrace while in uniform, and I could go on.....

Wayne Edmiston, concur 135%. At any one time, between 120-180 Fortune 500 Company CEOs are Marines. Most of them aren’t Officers or Senior SNCOs. The majority of them got out as Sergeants and below and lead these organizations, as well as form the bulk of power players that set blaze to tech and service startups and small companies. Most of our country is built on the backs of hardworking enlisted service members, and out of all the services combined, Marines lead from the front. This fact is built into our National Security and Defense, and organically powers (albeit later on in most of their private and civilian careers) our country’s National Economy. Bottom line, Marines provide a higher ROI than our country gets from most things they (aka “we the taxpayers”) pay for🇺🇸

Wayne Edmiston completely agree and will add the caliber of the enlisted Service Members volunteering to serve post 9/11 was a paradigm shift. It became less and less surprising to see new SGTs and SSGs coming to SFODAs with degrees from Ivy League or top 25 universities, additionally many were collegiate athletes. “What are you some sort of rocket scientist?” “As a matter of fact SGM, I am…”
