Despite there being tightened controls on media houses and restrictions on free speech in many countries over years, guerrilla journalists have been vital in generating support for democratic changes and drawing attention to regional problems on a global scale. My article on ‘Revolutions In Reporting Volume 03: A Global Perspective On Its Socio-Political Impact’, a part of the miniseries by Ruth Otim, analyses guerrilla journalism through numerous global perspectives, highlighting the socio-political contexts in which the journalistic practice operates. Relationships between public officials and journalists have always been fraught. But long-running tension has now deteriorated to unabashed hostility. The result: Journalists are denied access needed to hold the powerful to account, and the public is denied information about how its money is spent or about the actions of those elected to serve. At the Poynter Institute, we have been collecting examples, talking with professionals and contemplating strategies to stem this erosion of access that undermines the value of independent reporting that helps citizens participate robustly in their civic life. You can read more about this denial of access, and what journalists can do about it, in our new report “Shut Out: Strategies for good journalism when sources dismiss the press”: https://lnkd.in/e4fgwevh #Journalism #journalismmatters #reportingandediting #reporting #journalismethics

Today (3 May 2024) is World Press Freedom Day 👉 MSM penny-a-liners are NOT journalists! 👈 "The pen is mightier than the sword" (... and the tongue is mightier than both) - Edward Bulwer-Lytton The core values of true journalism are: 1) accuracy; 2) independence; 3) impartiality; 4) humanity; 5) accountability. To all MSM "journalists": As members of the public, we prioritize unbiased, factual reporting over propaganda and ideological agendas. Therefore, we expect you to uphold the core values of journalism.
