Yesterday I had an interesting conversation with a TSM (transitioning Service Member). I asked him if he was interested in DOD Skill Bridge or a Career skills program to prepare for his transition. He replied with " No thank you I am going to X state". I was confused because I did not understand how a state restricts a TSM from doing a CSP or SB while in service. I did not have time to follow up as I had other TSM that were prepared and knowledgeable of the opportunities for them so I breezed past the response and thanked him for his time. My takeaway? Some TSM do not understand what they have available as opportunities as a CSP or SB. So as a former NCO instead of complaining I am going to provide MY VIEW on these programs and hope that my network shares with other TSM so that they know what they have available to them. DOD Skillbridge: Its essentially a military internship with a specific company in hopes of receiving a job offer after the internship. Not all SB have job offers tied to them and some are just training. However, you can sign up for an SB by contacting the company directly or a better way would be to search on a DOD SkillBridge job board. I do not recommend the official DOD SB board as I found many contacts are out of date so instead I recommend looking up Hire Military and Vets2pm SB job board respectively as they both actively manage their SB programs. Hire Military Job Board: https://lnkd.in/giTdP2hp Vets2pm Skillbridge interest: https://lnkd.in/gbxiVGB3 Job Board: https://lnkd.in/ghVdsaSZ Many of the SB opportunities offer remote positions to facilitate employment as post covid we now understand you can do an office job from home. This means you can apply and attend a SB in another location while staying at your current duty station and move afterward. SB and CSP opportunities are not locked by a regional location and the goals of these programs are to help reduce veteran unemployment and support our TSM in their discharge process. For TSM pending a general discharge you are also still able to take advantage of state workforce innovation programs at your discharged duty station or at your home state through several grants. Contact your local workforce board to find out more.

What’s my WHY⁉️ In 2018 I volunteered at a Veterans homeless Stand Down, and ran into a person I was stationed with 12 years earlier…unfortunately they were enrolled in HUDVASH and weren’t one of the other volunteers.
Another great #dodskillbridge expo brought to you by Hampton Roads Workforce Council SULTAN CAMP Nielsa (Nellie) Porter and Cassie Dawson This event will allow you to get face to face with the provider(s) and ask those important questions!! 1️⃣ What does the application process look like? 2️⃣ How early out should you apply? 3️⃣ What can you do to make yourself the candidate they want? AND 1️⃣ How many other interns have participated in this program? 2️⃣ How many of those interns were offered full time employment? 3️⃣ What was the contributing factor for those who were offered a role? 4️⃣ What’s the likelyhood that this has an employment opportunity attached to it? #transitioningmilitary #veterans Registeratiin link in the comments. I was obviously the product being sold. I had partnered with a military transition firm who specialized in Junior Military Officer placements. This firm advertised themselves as exclusive, and because of this, I didn't have an issue completing their extensive application and interview process. To me, the reward for weathering this storm was earned entry into their top-tier corporate placement program. An exclusive placement program that unfortunately began their work by trying to convince me to: 1. Accept career roles well outside of my preferences. 2. Remove all geographic restrictions making me mobile across the U.S. 3. Attend multi-day conventions with a strict rule the employer list was never to be revealed. 4. And not to worry about salary requirements until the program had been fully completed. I proudly walked away. Military separation partnerships, JMO or otherwise, shouldn't look or feel like this. At MRC Group, we focus on your individual career preferences, readiness, and development. We help you obtain a career that you want, and where you want it. We won't disappear once you've signed your offer letter, and most importantly, we never earn a placement fee from your job acceptance. Our service is to you and you alone. It's just that simple with us. #MilitaryTransition #CareerAdvice #NewBeginnings --------------------- Sharing weekly insights designed to fuel your career advancement - Follow Michael Chadwick & Mission Ready Consulting Group. Director & GO Virginia Region 5 Advocate✔Serving Military Spouses, Student Veterans, Transitioning Servicemembers & those who served in the US Military✯Diversity & Inclusion Strategist✯ Mentor✯
Everyone in our military community has a "SUPERPOWER" through Mentorship. American Corporate Partners (ACP) is a powerful tool in your toolbox. Whether you're a Military Spouse deciding on which career or business plan to embark on, a Student Veteran who is looking to be competitive upon graduation or a transitioning Service Member who is focused on gaining insight into their intended industry. Getting a Mentor helps you to gain focus and chart a path based on information not emotions and hearsay.
Success is achieved not in solitude, but through the strength of partnerships. At ACP, we stand firm in our belief that collaboration is the cornerstone of progress for military families. Representing ACP at the 757 Career Fair, our very own Whitney Chism experienced firsthand the transformative impact of partnerships! Beyond connecting with transitioning Veterans and Military Spouses, Whitney engaged with representatives from Hampton Roads Veterans Employment Center (HRVEC), Mission Technologies, a division of HII, and local reps from Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Program . Collaborative efforts such as this strive to recruit military candidates in various fields including airlines, IT, healthcare, leadership, and more, showcasing the power of collective action to achieve positive outcomes for the military community. Special thanks to Sultan Camp, Cassie Dawson , Matthew Jordan , Amy Hutchison, MA, AFC®, CWDP, Ming Morford, Elizabeth Pelto and Tricia Storey. #Partnership #Collaboration #MilitaryFamilies #Veterans #MilitarySpouses
