HLF is proud to offer a winning co-op experience that fosters a sense of community, peer-to-peer learning, and develops a pipeline of talented individuals who share our vision for the future. As we continue casting our nets to the future, we’re committed to offering students #endlessopportunities for growth and meaningful connections! We recently caught up with Thomas G., Engineering Intern in our Newport News facility, to see how his placement is going. Let’s hear more from Thomas! Were you seafood fan before joining HLF? What’s your favourite product? Yes! I always try to eat healthy, so I’ll have some type of seafood at least 1-2 times a week. High Liner’s Crispy Breaded Shrimp and Pan-Sear Salmon are my favorites. What’s been the best part of your placement with HLF so far? It’s hard to pick! I’ve had the chance to learn a lot of great things so far this summer. This includes learning about ammonia refrigeration, how it works, and its key role in food manufacturing. I’ve also had the opportunity to learn about the role of engineering behind many of the food processing stages, to shadow staff on the floor, and to work on several different AutoCAD projects, learning new functions and commands within the computer-aided design software. It's safe to say that I'll complete my placement with lots of valuable knowledge. Have you worked on any special projects during your placement? If so, can you tell us more about them? A special project I’ve worked on is updating and adjusting the master AutoCAD drawing plan for our Newport News facility. I modified, cleaned up, and implemented the HLF layer standards into that master drawing, ensuring each piece of equipment was correctly labeled. As a result, the Engineering team now has a high-quality, accurate AutoCAD drawing of the Newport News facility that they can refer to well into the future. How has your placement impacted your perception of HLF and/or the seafood industry? I’m proud to work for a company that strives to prioritize sustainability, protect marine life, and uphold their responsibility to nourish communities. As an engineer it’s important to bring cost-effective and reliable technical solutions to deliver high quality products to consumers. Ensuring environmentally friendly practices while doing so is vital and something HLF does very well. What advice would you give to other students considering an internship at HLF? Make the most of your time with your coworkers and supervisors. I’ve been able to learn so much from people with decades of industry experience. It’s a privilege to work with so many brilliant people and learn practical things from them that I couldn’t learn in school. Make the most of it and don’t hesitate to ask about anything you’d like to know more about. Thomas, your enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work are valued by the HLF team. Keep shining and best of luck with the rest of your Co-Op term! #HighLinerFoods #Careers #Coop #Engineering

In 2023 as a whole, I have learnt a lot. If I start listing them, it starts to sound like a brag. Updating my LinkedIn regularly would be a better idea than a year-end dump of all I've done. It started with an update of my portfolio, applying to different firms for my internship, interviewing and deciding the pros and cons of working in each firm. Volunteering and attending workshops at NIUA. Getting certified in software. Working with people in the industry and gaining a humanised perspective of the field of architecture. The last bit sounds funny but it's the most profound thing that I've come to realise. While studying all I saw were the buildings, bricks, RCC, services, sheets, and submissions. I never saw the people behind it all. Cursing the architects of the building we have to survey because the levelling of the staircases is weird *cough* Triveni Kala Sangam *cough*. That is something to be discussed some other time. The main takeaway is that the building isn't faulty because it's made by a man. To err is human. Rather the building is incomplete for the future to improve. In the end, i'll leave you with something funny that happens to everyone at some point, until the next post...

Director at PIVOT | Making property development simple and accessible. Driving 15%-20% annualised returns on equity for our clients.
I did my own apprenticeship in simpler times. Most housing was single level, individual homes. Now we have terraces, three level walk up apartments and apartments buildings. These all bring complexities of design and specification that were unimagined when I was an apprentice. People always bang on about nothing’s changed in building for fifty years, we’re still back in the 20th century etc. I’ve been in the industry for that period of time. There is some truth to that however building is completely different now from when I started. There’s way more science involved, there’s way more technical knowledge in putting buildings together. Here’s some of the changes that happened just while I was an apprentice. Precut/prenailed frames and trusses, aluminium windows, insulation, ready mix concrete, concrete screeds & helicopters, chipboard flooring, coloursteel roofing, gib board linings, hi-abs for deliveries and a few more I can’t remember. There’s been a ton of changes and improvements since then. Not all of them for the better, some of them just invent new unforeseen issues. As we improve our buildings we also invent new problems (like condensation issues) that need re-solving. Also, the site managers that run larger sites of 10-50 unit projects, let alone much larger projects, are to be really admired. The good ones skills and experience are incredible. Make me look like a novice. We’ve still got a lot to learn about getting better at building houses that are good for people and the planet. I like where we’re going, we just haven’t got it all right yet. But we’ve still come a long way from my early days on the job.

Why is hands on, real-world experience so essential for students? Robb Berg, Principal of Design Workshop, highlights the importance of shaping the next generation of landscape architects through involvement outside the traditional classroom environment. There is often a gap between the theoretical approach taught in the classroom and the practical application on real projects. "Working for communities and with clients means understanding construction budgets, managing time constraints, navigating material limitations, and many more challenges, all the while trying to create meaningful and impactful work," says Robb. It is important to invest in this upcoming generation of young professionals, and Design Workshop’s Design Week and the Dr. Charles Fountain Internship Program are two examples of how we are providing practical experience for undergraduate and graduate students. To learn more about these programs and the importance of real-world experience for students, click the link below to read Land8: Landscape Architects Network's recent article by our very own Robb Berg. https://lnkd.in/g3SJQKYM #realworldexperience #youngprofessionals #landscapearchitects #internshipprogram #thoughtleadership #involement #practicalexperience #approach #designworkshop

I am pleased to announce that I have successfully completed my summer internship with Arabcontractors . This practical experience in architecture has been incredibly enriching, and I am proud to receive a grade of “Very Good” for my performance. During my training period, I learned: •Carpentry, how to make wrenches, and most architectural things, theoretically and practically. •Buildings and how to build them correctly, theoretically and practically. •Paints and how to finish walls and shells. •Also, reinforced steel and everything related to it, and how to calculate the reinforcement needed for the work. They gave us a lot of encouragement and care and were keen enough to teach us all they know about the construction in whole, starting with the foundations of the stairs , moving on to the interior finishing and false ceiling of the concourse level, leading to the interior and exterior finishing . #Internship #Architecture #ProfessionalGrowth #ArabContractors #EngineeringSkills #Achievement #Engineering #SummerInternship #Engineering #ConstructionInternship

Here's a great example showcasing the seamless combination of Carbon #DesignEngine with end-use production materials and reliable hardware like the #M3Max.
Sherpa intern Aiden Rodriquez presents his college design challenge – an outrigger or ski pole for adaptive athletes. https://lnkd.in/g__jSfin Aiden utilized Carbon printed parts for additional padding to protect wearers from injury in a fall, and provided additional length, so athletes can get themselves back onto the ski chair without help. #designformanufacturing #productdesign #productdevelopment #internship #adaptiveathletes
