🌟Great to see Insights below from our recent partner roundtable in Durham, where we delved into strategies for enhancing sustained outcomes for individuals transitioning from custody and remand. 🤝One key finding from our mentoring service analysis: individuals often don't reside in the same area as the prison they exit. That's why our partnership models prioritise scalable mentoring services with local delivery. This approach ensures consistency of service provision, a crucial factor in driving positive outcomes. 📈Our analysis also underscores the importance of programme continuity. Those who complete a mentoring programme tend to experience significantly greater improvements compared to early exits. 🗣️And beyond quantitative data, our analysis reveals a recurring benefit of our approach — the advocacy provided by mentors. This personal touch plays a vital role in empowering individuals and navigating their onward journey. Excited to continue this dialogue and explore further opportunities for impact The Wise Group
The Wise Group's Community Justice programme helps people leaving prison to change their lives for the better, breaking the cycle of repeat offending that is so damaging to society and people's lives. As Rt Hon. Justine Greening noted last week, its time we broaden our horizons and tap into this pool of talent that is often overlooked due to historical stigmas. Watch footage from our recent visit to HMP Durham with Ruth Cadbury MP.

I am very curious, as are many, to see what changes the #state of #Indiana will be making to these #waivers. There are many people watching to see how the state is going to be addressing the severe lack of services. Hopefully there will be positive change. Not just cuts to try and fix the debacle with the aged and disabled waiver making it even harder to receive services for these vulnerable populations and their families. The state is rewriting Indiana’s Family Supports Waiver and Community Integration and Habilitation Waiver. These waivers provide critical home and community based services. Here is the upcoming virtual meeting with The Arc of Indiana to learn more and share your thoughts. Thursday, August 8 at 6:00pm – Virtual August’s Ask The Arc will serve as a virtual town hall meeting. https://lnkd.in/ebb3PqeQ

🌐 Today, at the 6th World Congress on Probation and Parole / The Hague, Faye Taxman and I discussed trends and challenges, emphasising desistance and rehabilitation. 🔍 We also unveiled the "Fourth Grand Challenges", four aspirational ideas for the near future. Here are the challenges we laid out: 🎯 Grand Challenge 1: Establish community corrections as a standalone sanction focused on desistance and rehabilitation. 🤝 Grand Challenge 2: Support desistance-focused community corrections through relationship-building, culture change, and community support. ⚖️ Grand Challenge 3: Promote fair and just treatment for individuals on supervision and those who work in the field of community corrections. 🌱 Grand Challenge 4: Invest in individuals, families, communities, and community corrections to foster desistance and rehabilitation. Your insights are invaluable. What are your thoughts on these directions for the future?

love seeing the wisdom of former students out there... Austin Harrison "Memphians should resolve to do what they can to push our local leaders to make Memphis a city that chooses people first. This means holding out-of-town slumlords accountable to ensure they are providing livable and sanitary conditions, especially those slumlords using local, state, or federal housing subsidies. This means reorienting our economic development strategies to foreground Black neighborhoods and other working class communities in order to close our racial wealth gap. This means expanding our existing public Pre-K program to include all families. This means reimagining the way our city views local law enforcement and (most importantly) the way local law enforcement view us. This means so much more, but most importantly, this means all of us getting more engaged politically at the “local-est” of levels. We must ALL resolve to hold our leaders accountable if we want to see this city choose people first.”
Three great minds sharing their hope for Memphis in 2024!

My latest column for Police1: a new fellowship program wants more applications from rural law enforcement and corrections officers. You know how your area is damaged by opiate abuse, and you probably have at least one idea for fixing that. The Reaching Rural Initiative exists to help you make that concept a reality.
Thank you Kathleen Dias and Police1 for covering the Reaching Rural Initiative. Reaching Rural Fellow Denise Waff of Prince George County, Virginia did an excellent job sharing the story of how the program has helped her community. https://lnkd.in/e25xZSAA

Dr. Starsky D. Wilson recently joined Start Early President Dr. Diana Rauner and a panel committed to discussing what tools and tactics are needed to elevate and center family voice in community systems building. Panelists agreed that families must be involved in the development of programs, policies, and systems as equal partners when they work alongside educators and public sector leaders. "What are some of the policies and practices that you have seen or that you desire to be implemented to address inequalities?" Dr. Wilson asked the panel. Children's Defense Fund-Ohio Parent Advisory Board member Ugochi Akoi said collaboration is key. "Having created this space where families are able to address the challenges that they have faced and then shaping policies and practices to address those so as to reduce future discrimination from happening," Akoi said. "And, then, money, right Allocating resources in a way that addresses disparities that are happening." Make sure to watch this special webinar on community systems building now! It's 600 A.D. in Britain and the Saxons of Essex found a new territory called Middlesex. By this time, you have the South Saxons (Sussex), East Saxons (Essex), Middle Saxons (Middlesex), and the West Saxons (Wessex). For us in New Jersey, you'll recognize familiar names. Except for one. Why is there no Wessex County in New Jersey? When NJ was in its English-ruled infancy it was split in two, East and West Jersey. In the 1600's East Jersey formed the Counties of Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, and Monmouth. West Jersey formed Salem and Burlington. As New Jersey unified and developed new Counties, Sussex County was founded in 1753. And for anyone looking at a map, here is my glaring problem with that. Sussex being the northern-most County in the State, its name, to put it politely, is stupid considering its namesake. So stupid in fact that with it being WEST of Essex and Middlesex, naming it Wessex County is just so obvious. Also there was never a "Norsex" (Northern Saxon) kingdom in England, so again Wessex County make sense. Since then, Counties have been partitioned and new were Counties founded, but none were to be named Wessex. Perhaps one day we'll see it become a 22nd County in New Jersey. Oddly enough, a fictional Wessex County, New Jersey does exist and in all places it's the Friday the 13th series. Anyway, this is my short rant on why Sussex should be renamed Wessex County, and New Jersey can form a new 22nd County in South Jersey called Sussex. #NJHistory #Wessex #22ndCounty

"This year, CSI prioritized championing charter voices by ensuring active engagement in various committees, working groups, and task forces. In fact, nearly a quarter of CSI staff represented CSI and the charter voice at the state and national levels. Our voices will continue to be heard as we guarantee CSI schools’ interests are considered by decision-makers." 📢 Let's continue to champion Colorado charter public schools together!
