Be an ally. Be Kind. We ALL have one thing in common, we are all human beings first. Yet, so many different people continue to experience discrimination for a multitude of reasons. Financial wellness in the LBGTQ+ community face unique challenges and setbacks-- we all deserve to have access to financial products and services in an equitable environment. The 2024 LGBTQ+ Financial Wellness Report's key findings are a rude awakening that there is much work to be done for better financial inclusion. *Roughly half (48.15) of LGBTQ+ adults say they are financially unwell, compared to one-quarter (25.7%) of the general public. Both BIPOC and younger (age 18-24) LGBTQ+ adults are even more likely to say they are financially unwell. *Three in ten (30.8%) LGBTQ+ adults say they have experienced discrimination while accessing financial services *Roughly half (48.15) of LGBTQ+ adults say they are financially unwell, compared to one-quarter (25.7%) of the general public. *Nearly 60% (59.7%) of LGTBQ+ adults have annual household incomes below $75,000. "The data underscore the need for our economic empowerment programs, especially for younger BIPOC LGBTQ+ folks. I hope the data are a call to action for organizations serving our community. Given what we know about who is struggling the most, these organizations have an opportunity to center BIPOC young adults by being culturally responsive, trauma informed, and offering voice and choice to young people.” Maruka Rivers, Director of Economic Empowerment Programs at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation How is your credit union being an ally? A 2019 article in the Harvard Business Review made the case that LGBTQ+ inclusion is good for the economy. As more businesses make this connection, they are stepping forward to make an economic case for non-discrimination protections and against discriminatory laws. Fast forward to Andrea Frank, a Door County resident and recent Canary Fund grant recipient who helped to develop a project in helping businesses show their support for and welcoming the LGBTQ+ community. The Pride Flag Initiative (from Open Door Pride) is designed to offer free pride flags to local businesses or organizations to fly outside of their business to show customers they are a supportive, welcoming, and inclusive place. The goal of our initiative is to have all businesses flying the flag and support the LGBTQIA+ community. This June, I reread an article I wrote last year. Unfortunately, we’ve seen MORE legislative harm and attacks on the LGBTQ+ community over the passing year. It reminded me that the structures we create (in any environment) produce behaviors that serve that structure. As business leaders, we must be very intentional about the structures we create. Are we promoting inclusivity and acceptance? Or are we creating an environment that allows for or excuses exclusivity? The private sector can be a powerful channel to demonstrate what we stand for and demand when legislation fails us. 🏳️🌈 https://lnkd.in/eCTpyYvz

Pride month is around the corner... Are you at risk for rainbow washing? Each year during Pride, companies modify their logo and merch with rainbow colours and images to demonstrate their support for the LGBTQ+ community. But are some of them just monetizing the rainbow? You might be familiar with green or blue washing, but another emerging issue in the ESG-universe to be aware of is rainbow washing—using rainbows in advertising or branding to indicate support for the LGBTQ+ community, but without providing that same support and advocacy for this marginalized group throughout the rest of the year. Our CEO and Founder Ivy (Ivanna) Lumia had a chance to sit down with the legendary Rob Smith to discuss the critical importance of an organization’s governance of LGBTQ+ matters and what Boards can do to mitigate the risk of rainbow washing. In the quest for equality and support, one stark reality often overlooked is the disproportionate underfunding of LGBTQ organizations. At The Trevor Project, we are acutely aware of this challenge, which a recent insightful article by my fabulous colleague, Tina M.
