Social media saved the Computer Science community from falling apart. Last year, many Computer Science students around the country were disheartened as mass layoffs happened and job offers were rescinded. 😔 Most people didn't know what to do. They were disconnected and limited to the resources available at their colleges. We needed a way to connect, share resources, and support each other beyond the walls of our classrooms, especially for women in male-dominated computer science classes. 🌸👩💻 We turned to social media. Student creators like myself, Morgan Young, Ciara Cade, Ronan Takizawa, and Ume Habiba rose up, sharing resources, opportunities, and advice on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn. 📲✨ [There are other super cool student creators I haven't mentioned, but we'll dedicate another post to that 😄] At first, it was chaotic and still somewhat disconnected. But as we grew and shared more, many of us started to organize our information. I built a structured classroom-centered community for the Computer Science Girlies. 🏫 Morgan made a LinkedIn Learning course and shared many workshops across the country. 🗣️ Ciara launched her project-intensive Tech Cadets community. 👩🏾💻 We found digital platforms that allowed us to structure our communities. As technologists, we innovated and took advantage of these platforms to make sharing our knowledge easier and more engaging. 💡 In return, learner engagement skyrocketed. 📈 Our communities grew stronger and more interconnected. 🤝🌟 Today, computer science students across the United States are connected, learning from each other, and working together to advance their careers. 🇺🇸💪 How has social media transformed your educational experience? Share your story below! ⬇️ #Education #EdTech #DigitalLiteracy #Learning #Education #WomenInTech

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Gen Z, aka "Digital Natives," are not technical. Worse yet, they think they are. I often tell my students, "You don't know what you don't know." So, this feedback from a new student in my General Education Tech course is greatly appreciated... When I selected this course, I honestly thought I knew almost everything about a computer and that this course would be a breeze for me, but after completing the first module, I realized I had a lot to learn. I can't give up just because I didn't get something right on the 1st try, and oh, I don't know everything there is to know about a computer :) I'm taking this as a win! #techeducation #communitycollege #educatorlife (The oldest version of this image I can find: https://lnkd.in/ebW6T638 Sean Tierney. Did you make this?)

For as long as I can remember, I've had a passion for technology. Whether it's fixing computers, setting up networks, building crypto mining rigs, or developing websites, I've always found myself in the middle of a tech adventure. But it's not just technology that motivates me to get up each morning—it's the thrill of creating something new, something that can transform a business or an industry for the better. I started my career as a young IT Manager at a small business while earning my degree in Business Administration (BBA) at Robert Morris College. Once I graduated, I took a job as a Computer Technician at Joliet Junior College. The job came with a great perk—free classes—so I jumped at the chance to learn C++. My professor at the time saw my passion and suggested I continue my education with a master's degree. That led me to enroll in the Management Information Systems (MIS) program at Governors State University. You might think MIS is an unusual choice for someone whose primary passion is tech, but it turned out to be the perfect blend of business and technology for me. It connected my business background with my love for tech in a way that felt right, helping me see the big picture of how technology can drive business success. And now, Red Oak Labs is here—not just as my next big idea, but as the culmination of everything I’ve learned and experienced over the past four decades. It combines my love of technology, my background in business, and my deep passion for learning and innovation. I've always been the kind of person who loves diving into the next big thing—not because it’s shiny, but because I believe in the power of progress and constant innovation. Red Oak Labs is a reflection of that philosophy. This isn't just a new project; it's a lifelong commitment to the kind of work I truly love. I can’t fully capture my excitement in words as I embark on this journey. So, with great enthusiasm, I present to you Red Oak Labs—a Fractional CIO Consulting business dedicated to helping businesses innovate, grow, and thrive through smart technology solutions. https://lnkd.in/gqTDkPTN
