Interesting article about a new survey that says trade associations are shifting from their traditional advocacy roles to becoming strategic partners within their industries. Leaders are feeling more confident, with 58% optimistic about their overall situation and 66% expecting revenue improvements. This evolution includes substantial new initiatives focused on strategic partnerships, education, and awareness-building. Despite a 32% anticipated increase in flagship meeting attendance, associations still face challenges in reaching pre-COVID levels. This is a different kind of leadership. And it’s one we should celebrate. What’s refreshing about the NSW Premier openly sharing his story of being two years sober is the positive representation it offers of an alcohol-free life. As Premier Chris Minns has discovered removing alcohol has made him feel better and ready for any challenge. “Giving up the grog was a massive change to my quality of life.” “I should have done it years earlier.” “Originally, I thought I’ll ditch it for a month. After three months I felt a million bucks and after six months I felt I’ll never go back.” The Premier’s comments come after Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce revealed on Friday that he had given up drinking and feels much better for it. There can be a degree of misty-eyed mythology around our political leaders and their use of alcohol – like Bob Hawke being lauded for famously skolling a yard of ale in world-record time while a scholar at Oxford. What’s not as well known is that Prime Minister Hawke actually gave up drinking throughout his time as Prime Minister. “I said to myself, ‘If you are going to become prime minister of this country, you cannot be in a position where you can make a fool of yourself in front of the country. I never had a drop for the whole period I was prime minister.” These stories matter because they tackle the stereotypes that business and politics at the highest level need to be done over a drink – and that alcohol needs to be part of every election campaign and event. Seeing people in positions of influence talk openly about cutting back on drinking, or even not drinking, helps to normalise it. Everyone’s story is different and every experience matters. What’s important is that we’re hearing these stories, when previously we heard quite a different narrative. That’s the kind of political leadership that’s worth applauding, and it’s great to see more stories like these emerging. https://lnkd.in/gamhHq4i
