Fabulous article! I had no idea she was an abstract artist as well. We live in fantastic times where, as women, we can freely and unapologetically be complex individuals and no longer live in ‘the box’ others tried to place us in. As human beings we are never just one thing; we are these interesting mix of life experiences, desires, loves, dislikes and sooo much more = beautifully uniquely complex 💕 Love her body of work shown in this article and looking forward to following her further.

See it. Say it. Unsorted. An exhibition presenting work from across MA Art and Science, MA Contemporary Photography; Practices and Philosophies, MA Fine Art and MA Fine Art Digital. It showcases the diverse range of practices and perspectives of over 100 Year 1 students, midway through their MA studies. The title is a reference to the London transport poster campaign (See it. Say it. Sorted.) that encourages vigilance and reporting on others in the name of safety. For this exhibition, however, the paternalistic address of the original campaign is challenged and inverted. Come and see what we’ve made, it says, tell us what you think but don’t expect us to provide you with a series of neat conclusions. The exhibition is not a full stop, it is not trying to resolve things or impose a unified perspective. Instead, it proposes a process of disorder, a cacophony of voices where difference is valued, and intellectual risk is encouraged. "Bodies of Work", an exhibition at the Harvey Milk Photo Center featuring works by KatinKa Herbert, will be on display at Harvey Milk Photo Center from March 2, 2024 -April 20, 2024 and will be free and open to the public. This exhibition explores the commodification of athletic bodies. Bringing two projects into dialogue, KatinKa Herbert delves into the lives of Mexican wrestlers and Cuban athletes. In doing so, her images capture the dilemma of physical performance: a tense relationship between economic necessity and the human form. While some athletes experience their bodies as vehicles of financial stability and international travel, many grapple with unpredictable incomes, visa barriers, and the looming threat of career-ending injuries. As such, ‘Bodies of Work’ is a study of precarious labor. Here, lives that are ordinarily defined by movement are frozen in the photographic frame. Their muscles resonate with tension and potential; their poses strain under personal and political weight.

Changes in life means that life changes. 🙏 *The Vital Role of Art in Challenging Perspectives* In a world inundated with data and rapid changes, the necessity of art often gets overshadowed. Yet, it's precisely during these times of uncertainty and flux that the significance of art becomes more pronounced and needed more desperately than ever. Art serves as both a mirror reflecting our society and a catalyst for change, challenging us to question, evolve, and as always – to grow. Art is not merely about aesthetics; it's a powerful medium for communication, empathy, and understanding. Through various forms like paintings, literature, music, and performance, art provides a platform for diverse voices and perspectives to be heard. It assists our dialogue and fosters empathy by allowing us to step into others' shoes, broadening our worldview. How often these days do we attempt to really understand the viewpoint of another? Or are we simply content with labeling them as "The Other..."? Art for me has a unique ability to challenge us, question us and confront us. It confronts societal norms, biases, and injustices, prompting us to reevaluate our beliefs and perceptions. By pushing boundaries and defying conventions, art inspires innovation and progress. It forces us out of our comfort zones, sparking conversations that (can) lead to meaningful change. In a rapidly changing world where perspectives can become rigid and divisive, art offers a vital counterbalance. It invites us to embrace ambiguity, to explore complexity, and celebrate diversity. As we navigate the myriad of interconnected complexities of our time, let us recognize the indispensable role of art, not just as a source of beauty, but as a catalyst for introspection, empathy, and transformation. What new stories can be told when everything remains the same in museum culture? The changing of an exhibition doesn’t signal the changing of attitudes in our art institutions. Many times, old ways of doing things impede the progress the visitors, donors, and many times board members push for. A place like the Smithsonian has a strict set of guidelines for presentation to the public so we expect a certain feeling of academia, history, and research when we enter those spaces. But public and even private museums must do better with their presentation of people, values, and opportunity to enact a true culture shift. https://lnkd.in/gKJTxPMd
