Could I be any more excited for the next three days given the day and a half I’ve already had in New York. More steps than I thought possible but the only way to savour the city and learn more about its retail offerings is to get out and walk around it. I think every trend on the 2024 ‘trends to watch’ list has been ticked and experienced in person. Yesterday’s pre conference session on Retail Media was actually a fantastic example of why events such as the National Retail Federation conference are so important because it showed consistency in thought-led expertise. When you have different experts from around the world - supplier, agency and retailer experts- talking on a topic such as retail media, all bringing different case studies and angles but ultimately all showing the same results and having the same conclusions, it’s a powerful reinforcement around the key things that are shaping and evolving our retail industry. The couple of hours spent being guided by the formidable Jack Stratten were fantastic and deserve a post of its own so watch out for one to follow with my take on an afternoon in SoHo, taking in an eclectic mix of stores. It starts all over again today as the actual conference and expo itself kicks off. The scale of this gathering of suppliers from around the world is staggering. Looking forward to seeing it all. The phrase ‘child in a sweet shop’ comes to mind.

Why do events charge vendors? Because they’re doing it wrong. Hey LinkedIn Connections, Soliciting vendors for events that’s not 100% shopping, signals that the funding or event model went wrong. Or event not yet evolved from a failing practice. Perhaps event not properly budgeted or sponsored. Events should have sponsors. While adding vendors is a quick bandaid to budgetary shortfalls, there still exists a sore spot. Everybody will feel it later. Even vendor events that are 100% shopping 🛍️ can improve their model and lesson vendor remorse. How? By turning event into a popup shop store with singular checkout. Customers leave with one transaction instead of ten or more (if that). At these events, vendors serve as volunteers in the shop, a less intimidating role which is more attractive to shoppers. Shoppers shop at their leisure taking items to one or more checkout points. Take time to plan or plan to fail. Time to evolve. End vendor remorse. And vendors look around. These events are here and growing. No more vendor remorse. Oh wait, how does the event make money, they subscribe to Creator Insights.
