It's PRIDE Month 🌈 , and we think it’s an important time to shed light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ adults when it comes to healthcare. According to a KFF report from earlier this year, one-third (33%) of LGBTQ+ adults have experienced unfair or disrespectful treatment or have had at least one negative experience with a healthcare provider. Among those who reported negative healthcare experiences in the past three years, nearly one-quarter (24%) said these experiences worsened their health. 👎 Creating inclusive and accepting healthcare environments is crucial. 🤝 We are excited about the work being done by OutCare in this area. OutCare has developed 'The OutList,' a comprehensive database of LGBTQ+ affirming healthcare providers. Additionally, they provide community resources, health equity CEU training, patient experience design, and more. By supporting initiatives like those from OutCare, we can help ensure that everyone receives respectful and competent healthcare, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. 💗 #inclusivity #patientexperience #pridemonth

Listen we all know we need to collect the data. However, before you do so make sure you invest in taking the time to train your staff how to collect the data in a way that is respectful and reduces stigma. This improves the experience for both the person collecting the data and the member. MIH and Lisa Sloane have a great training that prepares your staff on collecting SOGI data. Healthcare access is a fundamental right, yet many in the LGBTQ+ community face significant barriers that prevent them from receiving the care they need. These obstacles stem from a combination of social stigma, discrimination, lack of provider knowledge, and systemic inequities, all of which contribute to poorer health outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals. To break down these barriers, it is crucial to promote an inclusive healthcare environment. This involves comprehensive training for healthcare providers on LGBTQ+ issues, implementing anti-discrimination policies, and ensuring insurance coverage for LGBTQ+ specific treatments. Additionally, creating a welcoming and affirming atmosphere in healthcare settings can encourage LGBTQ+ individuals to seek care without fear of judgment. Addressing these barriers is not just about improving individual health outcomes; it's about fostering a society where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, has the opportunity to thrive. #LGBTQHealth #HealthcareForAll #BreakTheBarriers #GenerationalWellness #InclusiveCare #HealthForAll #LGBTQCommunity #BarrierFreeHealth

We invite mental health providers who are allies for LGBTQ+ clients, as well as LGBT+ practitioners, to participate in our upcoming “Our Safe Haven” session series. These gatherings provide a space for open dialogue and shared insights on how to establish and sustain safe spaces for individuals with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. During each session, we explore several discussion topics, including but not limited to: 🔹Stress, including the chronic social pressures faced by stigmatized minority groups. 🔹Professional biases, including those faced by both LGBTQ+ clients and practitioners 🔹Resources for specialized knowledge and training 🔹Ethical and professional challenges Creating and maintaining safe spaces for clients and providers can be daunting, often feeling overwhelming. Happy Pride Month! 🏳️🌈 We strive to create a safe, welcoming, and open environment for all members of the Leap Orbit team. And part of that allyship is calling out the work that still needs to be done within the healthcare industry to ensure that all patients have access to compassionate, inclusive and equitable care. Many health organizations are implementing initiatives to improve the LGBTQ+ healthcare experience. Why? Because individuals in the community can face misunderstanding, discrimination, and even violence in care settings--and this causes many to delay or avoid treatment. While LGBTQ+ and gender-affirming care providers aren't standard filters on most provider directories (though we'd love to see it), there is a public resource available to help patients find care providers thanks to the Tegan and Sara Foundation, GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality, and Cigna Healthcare. The LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory is "a free, searchable database of doctors, medical professionals and healthcare providers who are knowledgeable and sensitive to the unique health needs of LGBTQ+ people in the United States and Canada." 🔎 Find providers in your area here: https://lnkd.in/gXY-jvKU #lgbtqhealth #queerhealth #transhealth #health #wellness #healthcare #pride #equality

"Many people in the LGBTQ+ community avoid dealing with our financial health for the same reasons that we delay care to manage our physical and mental health. There is a real fear of rejection, a real fear of stigma, and those are real barriers to access whether you're talking about a doctor, a financial advisor, or a banker. So, for many of us, another significant barrier is trauma that we've experienced at the hands of both health systems and financial systems." Alex Sheldon (they/them), Executive Director of GLMA This #QueerMoneyPodcast interview with GLMA's Executive Director delves into how the barriers the LGBTQ+ community faces in financial services often parallel those in healthcare systems; and why queer folks often invest less but spend more on care than their cisgender or heterosexual counterparts. This a great deep dive into GLMA's initiatives and programs, as well as the broader landscape of LGBTQ+ health! 🎧 Listen to the full episode: https://loom.ly/18rdWKk #GLMA #LGBTQHealth #HealthEquity #QueerMoney #FinancialHealth

This designation means a lot to me as an employee of Children's Minnesota, and as an individual. As an organization, it means that we have foundational policies and training in LGBTQ+ patient-centered care. We have policies and benefits that are inclusive of our LGBTQ+ staff. As an individual, it means I can be more than an ally. I can be an agitator who affects positive change for the people we serve and the people who serve them. Being even a small part of progress is a big deal! Here's just some of what Children's Minnesota does to earn this redesignation: - The Children’s Minnesota gender health program. - Collecting patients’ pronouns and preferred name. - Updating patient care policies and procedures to be inclusive of gender and all family types. - Advocacy for LGBTQ+ supportive policies at the state legislature. - An active and engaged employee resource group (ERG) for LGBTQ+ employees and allies. - Educational efforts to ensure employees have the skills, knowledge and abilities to provide an inclusive care environment. #KidExperts

Research shows that LGBTQ+ populations are more likely to experience mental health illness, including suicidal ideation. In a Q&A with Ingenovis Health for Pride Month, Patrick Decker-Tonnesen, Ph.D. articulates a poignant truth concerning the LGBTQ+ community within healthcare environments: "LGBTQ+ community members are often forced to wear masks or hide their identities—sometimes for their entire lives for their mental and physical well-being and safety. This makes the interactions between LGBTQ+ providers and patients that much more important." This statement underscores a critical issue—the dire need for authentic representation and understanding in healthcare. The significance of fostering inclusive environments where patients and providers alike can openly express their identities cannot be overstated.
