The Euro Championships action is well under way in Germany, but how are fans engaging with the tournament? In our latest YouGov report, we’re exploring what the tournament’s audience looks like and how they follow it across six key competing European nations, as well as in the US – where we’ve seen interest in the sport growing rapidly. Some interesting insights to note: - As the host nation for event, Germany has the highest levels of followership for the tournament (52%), as well as the most even gender split of supporters. - Despite not having a team participating in the tournament, there is strong engagement from young soccer fans in the US. - Scots are the most likely to say they will “try to watch as many games as they can” (57%). - Out-of-home viewing is most prevalent in British culture, with more than 1 in 3 England and Scotland fans watching the tournament at pubs, bars and other outdoor venues. How About A Lesson On Football History In Olympic Games? - Part 1 Football has a storied history in the Olympic Games, reflecting the sport's evolution and global appeal. Its journey through the Olympics is marked by notable milestones, dramatic matches, and the emergence of football legends, weaving a rich atmosphere of cultural exchange, athletic excellence, and political nuance. The introduction of football to the Olympic stage began in the early 20th century. The sport was included in the 1900 Paris Games as a demonstration event, with only three club teams participating. It wasn't until the 1908 London Olympics that football was officially recognized as part of the Olympic program. The tournament featured six teams, with Great Britain claiming the gold medal after defeating Denmark in the final. The early years of Olympic football were dominated by European teams, reflecting the sport's strong roots in the continent. The 1924 Paris Olympics marked a significant turning point when Uruguay, a South American nation, emerged victorious. This victory heralded the rise of South American football on the world stage, a trend that continued with Uruguay's successful defense of their title at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. The inclusion of professional athletes in the Olympic football tournament has been a contentious issue. Originally, the event was intended for amateur players only, in line with the Olympic spirit promoted by Pierre de Coubertin. However, this amateur status rule often led to complications and inconsistencies, as many nations interpreted and enforced the rule differently. This disparity sometimes resulted in underwhelming competitions, with some teams unable to field their best players. The 1936 Berlin Olympics introduced an element of political drama to the football tournament. Amidst the rise of Nazi Germany, football served as a backdrop to broader geopolitical tensions. #EURO2024 and… #fines! National football associations represented in this summer’s European Championship have been #fined around € 1.3 million by organizers #UEFA during the tournament group stages. A few highlights: 🇭🇺 🇭🇷 🇨🇭 🇷🇸 🇷🇴 🇧🇪 🇵🇱 🇦🇱 8 teams — Hungary, Switzerland, Croatia, Albania, Poland, Serbia, Romania and Belgium — received fines for their #fans’ #behavior during all three of their respective group-stage matches. 🧨 While the majority of the fines distributed throughout the tournament were for offenses of #throwing #objects onto the pitch, the use of #pyrotechnics — including fireworks and flares — also saw multiple teams fined. 🗺️ Both Albania and Serbia were also fined for “transmitting a message unfit for a sports event”, relating to flags on display relating to #border #territory of the nations. 🇩🇪 Germany, as #host #nation, were fined twice for their #failure of “#protection of the #playing #area” — relating to supporters entering the pitch in the game — during Portugal’s group stage matches against Turkey and Georgia respectively. 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 🇸🇰 #21 of the #24 nations were fined at least once during the group stages, with only France, Spain and Slovakia not being fined so far. 🇮🇹 Italy were fined for #sucking sooo bad 🥶 Sources: NY Times, The Athletic and a few personal notes https://lnkd.in/ezXgVnNi
