If we want to realize a “digital democracy,” we must reimagine how technology is used and invest in building new tools to meet the challenges of public trust and participation. In E. Glen Weyl and Audrey Tang's new book, they argue “technology and democracy can be each other’s greatest allies.”

In a world where technology is advancing faster than our ability to regulate and understand it, we have the opportunity to reinvent democratic processes and drive meaningful change. Let’s take this as a powerful reminder that blending technology with governance, and innovation can unlock new possibilities and transform our future to make democracy more transparent, resilient, and participatory. In today's digital world, the online realm offers vast opportunities alongside significant risks. With over 5 billion people online 🌐 (Statista), 62% face potential harm (Ofcom), particularly affecting children, marginalised groups, and women♀️. The internet also exposes women to unequal levels of online harassment, gender-based hate speech, and sexism, imposing severe emotional and psychological trauma. This worsens existing inequalities and silences women's voices, hindering their participation in different aspects of life. The anonymity given by internet platforms allows perpetrators to carry out these crimes freely, deepening the sense of fear and insecurity among victims👩💻. Efforts to address these challenges are hindered by the lack of unified definitions for online harm. The Typology of Online Harms, proposed by the World Economic Forum, aims to bridge this gap by providing a common framework. Developed with a human rights approach, it categorises harms into content, contact, and conduct, empowering stakeholders to collaboratively combat online harms📱. To make the internet a safer place for women, governments, technology corporations, civil society organisations, and individual users must work together to achieve this🤝. We can foster an online safe and gender-equal culture by amplifying women's voices, challenging harmful stereotypes, and advocating for meaningful change🌍 Learn more here ➡️https://lnkd.in/eNuZ__5c #OnlineSafety #DigitalEmpowerment #GenderEquality #EndOnlineHarassment #TechForGood #HumanRights #EmpowerWomen #DigitalInclusion #SafeSpaces #OnlineEquality

At our conference in #Berlin, we today addressed the growing impact of disinformation on democratic systems and best strategies to defend democracy. Following a two year long process that included global experts from journalism, civil society, academia, and government the event convened over 100+ stakeholders from around the world to share insights and propose solutions to strengthen democratic #resilience. Thanks to everyone who contributed today to the discussion. We see the need for coordinated #collaborative action, sufficient #funding and public interest #infrastructure across sectors to further safeguard democracy in an increasingly polarized world. #strengthen #democracy
A short recap from todays conference on "Countering #Disinformation, Strengthening #Democracy" conference, held on September 23, 2024, at the Bertelsmann Stiftung in Berlin and organised by our impactful Upgrade Democracy project: After being welcomed by our board member Daniela Schwarzer and our Senior Advisor Dominik Hierlemann it addressed the growing impact of disinformation on democratic systems. Following a two year long engagement process that included global experts from journalism, civil society, academia, and government the event convened over 100+ stakeholders to share insights and propose solutions to strengthen democratic #resilience. Discussions covered: - The critical role of civil society and citizen participation in combating disinformation. - How to enable journalism’s to uphold its mission in times of orchestrated disinformation campaigns and financial constraints - Coordination mechanisms across civil society and international efforts to tackle the global disinformation crisis. - The role of technology, including AI, in spreading and countering false information. I also thank the team around Cathleen Berger and Kai Unzicker for the chance of sharing short key note at the breakout session on #technology & democracy (#Stuhlkreis). Facilitated by the thoughtful moderation of Charlotte Freihse we embarked on a broad discussion that underlined the need for coordinated #collaborative action, sufficient #funding and public interest #infrastructure across sectors to further safeguard democracy in an increasingly polarised world. We also investigated some of these questions previously in close cooperation with regional research partners in order to gain an overview of the global landscape of counter-disinformation initiatives and to identify commonalities and differences that will help us to further develop successful countermeasures. More on that can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gHv76P_K The challenges are plenty, but the creativity, willingness to share expertise and drive for impact of all participants was contagious. Onwards to #strengthen #democracy together! #demokratiestärken
