💧 40 to 60 percent of California’s water supply comes from groundwater. But in California and throughout the West, intensifying water challenges such as drought and unsustainable water pumping have endangered long-term water supplies, threatening to deplete aquifers and greatly impact water quality.
The Groundwater Accounting Platform—developed between ESA, the Environmental Defense Fund the California Water Data Consortium, Olsson—enables water managers, landowners, and water users to track water availability and usage, in order to avoid these undesirable outcomes and help communities meet water conservation goals.
A notable feature, notes Technology Services Lead John Henry Burns PE, is the utilization of open-source technology which provides water managers with the data and tools to monitor their water use and make informed, long-term decisions towards sustainability.

Many communities depend on groundwater to thrive. Groundwater alone accounts from between 40 to 60% of California's water supply, and we're even more dependent on it in drought years. California residents depend on groundwater for drinking water, for food, for irrigation, and for infrastructure, and it is crucial that Californians take steps to ensure its sustainability into the future. The Groundwater Accounting platform was built to support a variety of water users in visualizing and tracking their water budgets in near real time. The platform can integrate a variety of data sources, from satellite remote sense data to on the ground metered data, to support water users and decision makers as they manage their water budgets. Platform users can track water use for areas they oversee and gain insights about variability and trends in that use over time. There is inherent uncertainty in managing water resources in California, and for a myriad of reasons. As a water manager in the state of California, I want to be able to make sure that our stakeholders and water users have the appropriate data, tools, policies and programs in place that will enable them to make informed decisions. The accounting platform really provides an opportunity to show on a farm unit parcel level what's happening and and give people the ability and opportunity to make long term decisions for their operations. With accurate and current information available on water use, water agencies, water users and land owners are better able to manage their water usage over the long term, even in the face of unpredictable water years. This will help to understand, track, and account for groundwater resources across the state.
I love this; my current research aligns with this story. If there is one thing I've learned in my research thus far is the importance of unique ways to perform water irrigation in arid areas like California.
