Yesterday, I presented at The Graduate Employability Conference 2024 with Government Events I presented my most recent publication “Racism Shapes Careers” which you can read here https://lnkd.in/eh69fNFv My research is finding the specific workings of the ‘web of whiteness’ on the career trajectories of racialised minority PhDs and ECRs Instituions need to consider that racism does shape careers not just on the surface level, but in the small, mundane actions of university geographies and culture.

ATTN EDUCATION/CBO COLLEAGUES: If you have recent public high school grads who are still unsure of their post-secondary plans this fall, please share the NYU School of Professional Studies Career Pathways Bridge Program Application & encourage them to join Instant Decision Day (Virtual) on Thursday, July 25, 7-8 PM. REGISTER: http://bit.ly/3Y0HCMb NYU SPS Career Pathways Bridge Program = scholarship to an associate degree program, paid internships, college & career services, peer mentors, free meal plans, monthly MetroCards, semesterly stipends, Chromebooks, & more! If students need support completing their FAFSA applications, we are here to help. As National College Attainment Network (NCAN) reported, FAFSA completion rates dropped 11.6% for the 2024 graduating class. This is negatively impacting students’ abilities to make informed decisions about whether or not to enroll in college and if so, which college. And of course, all of this is impacting low-income students the most. While this is deeply troubling and yet, not surprising, I'm proud to work at an institution, with a team, and with city-wide partners that are dedicated to supporting students through this. On senior faculty’s obligation to be steward for academia. Once you are tenured, there is no excuse for not speaking up to defend your early career colleagues, on behalf of academic integrity and for evidence-based science. Too often, senior faculty say - it’s not my problem. The reality is - broken academic processes are all of our problem. When early career colleagues can not count on fair treatment, the publication system fails to ensure integrity, and evidence is questionable, the entire academic system fails. #academiclife

“Universities and research institutions need to provide holistic career training to support PhDs transitioning to non-academic roles.” I 100%, but very much so highly respectfully of course, disagree. PhD = “Doctor” of Philosohy “Doctor” = Latin for “Teacher” If phds want a non academic career, perhaps they should, I don’t know, do something other than go for a degree that literally has the word “teacher” in it. That’s not to say PhDs can’t do something else. But if you want to change the degree’s purpose, then change its name to align with it. And this is why we have DBAs and other related degrees that are just fine. Being on this job market has taught me one thing: universities should be teaching theory and wisdom, and they should not be placed for “careers”. That’s the real problem. Not what PhDs are or rather should be trained to be doing in industry.
A few days ago, I posted a book recommendation on how PhDs can use their skills in non-academic careers. It unexpectedly went viral. The response reflects the need to continue to promote non-academic careers for PhDs. But the need goes beyond raising awareness. The reality is that the majority of PhDs will transition to a non-academic career. It no longer makes sense to train PhDs exclusively for a career they will not pursue. Universities and research institutions need to provide holistic career training to support PhDs transitioning to non-academic roles. PhDs have numerous career options beyond academia. Academia is the alternative career.

Without real knowledge and hands-on experience, students can’t measure what career is the right fit for them. We go blindly into the workforce or higher education “thinking” this is the right job for me. So many find out it’s not or it wasn’t what they expected. Getting practical experience early on is the best way to determine your strengths and improve your skills for the future.
