“We don’t understand our energy usage, but we need to.” - Cynthia Shaw from NATO - Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA). 💭 Although the solutions are out there, innovations seem to be happening elsewhere. The development of tech is especially slow in the government sector and it is not keeping pace with innovation. 👇 Take a look at WEAF's analysis of the HM Government's recent paper "Invest 2035". To shape the upcoming Industrial Plan 2025, we must collaborate to make it work for us all - this means across the region from North to South and East to West.👇 The call to action is that we must be propositional and use this opportunity to put the South West at the forefront of investment, this strategy is not just about #aerospace, #defence, and #advancedmanufacturing; therefore, the South West must unite across sectors and industry. ✈ 🚁 🚀 🔋 📣 We must highlight our collective voice to achieve #prosperity, #skills, and #investment into the West of England.📣 #UKinvestment #SouthWestisBest #WEAF
WEAF welcomes the UK Government’s announcement on a green paper for the modern Industrial Strategy, which we hope will provide exciting opportunities for the aerospace industrial heartland here in the South West. We were particularly pleased to understand that Place has been emphasised as key to growth for the UK's untapped potential in regions and cities. We must ensure the South West remains at the forefront leading on growth areas such as, Advanced Manufacturing, Defence, and Digital Technologies. Many of WEAF's members are pioneering cutting-edge aerospace and advanced manufacturing technologies. Therefore, we must seek to boost economic growth and investment to ensure the West of England remains a global manufacturing powerhouse. WEAF will advocate on behalf of our members, and our region, so that we are part of the future of Britain’s industrial capabilities and growth. https://lnkd.in/eTjb7YmG #UKInvestment #WEAF #SouthWestisBest #advancedmanufacturing #aerospace #defence #space Department for Business and Trade Leonardo Rolls-Royce Airbus Western Gateway Great South West

#ESG vs #SRI: the case of Safran I had an interesting exchange with a client running a sustainable mandate 🌲. To make a long-story short, Safran has a #convertible bond and is, among other things, involved in the defense sector. Since It did very well ytd and he was puzzled on why I didn't hold it since it was "Rated A by MSCI for ESG". 😑 Let me share my answer: 1. You cannot use MSCI ESG rating for equities for bonds (because the reference universe to normalize the scoring won't work outside the original asset class) 🤔 2. The ESG score is a simple percentile ranking among a few preset metrics (e.g. carbon intensity, paygap...) so it is FAR from being a proper sustainability study (But better than doing nothing!) 3. The mandate had SRI criterias which among other things were excluding controversial weapons. These include so-called "indiscriminate weapons". I think everyone would agree a "fire and forget" air-surface missile with 70 km range shot from a 10 km altitude aircraft is pretty much undiscriminating. 🚀 Citywire actually reported the issue several times: https://lnkd.in/dZ52E2rr 4. Add a zest of bribery in China https://lnkd.in/d5_2Eef8 5. And other governance issues not captured by the leading MSCI ESG score in Governance https://lnkd.in/dhJKYJAc And since one would probably say "But we need to defend ourselves against Russia" well... 🚨 6. Military equipment allegedly sent to Russia during the arm embargo (that's... bad): https://lnkd.in/d7UDy_hV https://lnkd.in/dKiZWvYp TL;DR: Don't solely rely on MSCI ESG rating for sustainable analysis. A Google (or Ecosia 😎 ) search goes a long way. (But it takes time)

Engaging yet disheartening insights 💡 . The environmental impact of the US Military extends far beyond its 750 overseas bases, leaving genuine destruction. 🛢️ In 2017 alone, their *daily* oil consumption reached a staggering 269,230 barrels 🤯 , raising critical questions about sustainability and the true cost of defense. Is it possible to curb this impact, or does the perpetual demand for arms outweigh environmental considerations? 🤔 A thought-provoking exploration of the intersection between national security and ecological responsibility. #EnvironmentalImpact #MilitarySustainability #NationalSecurity #EcoResponsibility #Military #USMilitary #CarbonEmissions #Empire #JoinTheSwrm https://lnkd.in/ddBHNAUj

The new National Defense Industrial Strategy communicates a host of important tools and reforms that will help the US compete globally. But one key piece of the puzzle is missing: increasing procurement. Building production capacity and training workers can be counterproductive if you then don't engage those assets in meaningful work. At a time when our weapons stockpiles are low and our allies are in need, Congressional appropriators should take heed of their critical role in maintaining the Defense Industrial Base. Strengthening the U.S. Supply Chain, Growing the Defense Industrial Base, and Accelerating Technology
You are spot on! The U.S. Industrial Base cannot and will not make investments in automation and aspire to work towards Industry 4.0. if they do not have demand. Private industry, especially small businesses are not ignorant. They face different challenges than big businesses who have multi-year contracts, a volume of work which enables them to more easily sustain during the hard times, and can get bank financing. The Government has the luxury of printing money. The majority of manufacturers in the U.S. are small & medium businesses. It’s time to commit to understanding and and supporting them!
