We are thrilled to celebrate Sarah Laaser-Webb, one of our outstanding volunteers, recognized at the Governor's Volunteer Awards Ceremony on June 25th at Ankeny High School! Nominated by our Community Engagement Coordinator, Sara Roberts, Laaser-Webb has been a Realtor with Re/Max of Ames & Gilbert since 2009. She got involved with YSS as a Licensed Iowa Foster Care Parent and has been an invaluable member of the YSS Friends Committee since. For the past 15 years, she has played a vital role in our Holiday Giving Program, giving her time, talent, and treasure. From donating large moving boxes for Holiday Giving Tree hosts at local businesses to sharing her agency’s enclosed trailer for the Summer Supply Drive, her dedication knows no bounds. Her years of unwavering commitment were recognized with a prestigious award from Governor Kim Reynolds . Thank you for your incredible service and for helping us continue to create hope and opportunity! #WeAreYSS

Help At Your Door was recently recognized as Golden Valley Rotary Club Business of the Year. I am proud to serve on the board of directors and am reaching out to ask for your help to solve for three areas of need that are critical to fulfill the mission of helping seniors and those with disabilities remain independent in their homes. 1. Staffing – We have critical gaps in our paid staff roles. Who do you know that might be a good fit for our openings in operations, finance and store coordination? https://lnkd.in/dJGmWrAf 2. Volunteers – Our demand for transportation and home services are exceeding our supply of volunteers. Please consider volunteering and/or sharing with your network! https://lnkd.in/dcJXm3xP 3. New Van – Grocery delivery remains the largest service provided and the current vans are starting to fail. Please consider donating to fund new vans. https://lnkd.in/deDnNaDz #donate #jobopportunity #volunteers

Was an honour to be asked to speak at the latest Quartet Community Foundation event. I used the time to talk about the social model of disability. The social model of disability is the understanding that disability is something that is created by society. This is because disabled people face barriers that stop them from taking part in society in the same way as non-disabled people. There are physical barriers that disabled people face. These could include things like: - A sign that someone with a visual impairment can’t read. - An inaccessible building without wheelchair ramps. - A webpage with flashing animations that could trigger a seizure. There are also social barriers or attitudinal barriers, like stereotypical beliefs that non-disabled people have about disabled people. Assuming that a disabled person “can’t do” something creates a barrier for that person. According to the social model of disability, it’s these barriers that make a person disabled. Disability isn’t something that exists inside your body or your mind. It’s something that is created by an inaccessible society. Here at Paul's Place, we work to break down these barriers every day.
"What do disabled people need to thrive?" This was the theme of our latest Behind the Scenes event for fundholders, which took place earlier this month at one of FACE's youth centres in South Gloucestershire. A big thank you to Lynda Williams and Kayley Waller from Paul's Place and Debbie Teml from FACE, who spoke passionately about how they are supporting disabled people in their communities. Access to our regular “Behind the Scenes” events across the South West is one of the many benefits of becoming a Quartet Community Foundation fundholder. We have community land trust projects right here in the region that are working to change how we think about community stewardship and ownership of land. Here is a conversation about how land trusts are democratizing housing in Brooklyn. #communitylandtrust #democratizingwealth
“Community land trusts are nonprofit corporations that hold land on behalf of a place-based community, while serving as the long-term steward for affordable housing, community gardens, and other community assets on behalf of a community.” Community land trusts are changing the game and democratizing housing in Brooklyn - Brooklyn Org
